I bought Original Pirate Material back when it came out and there was a huge buzz around The Streets ushering in a "new era of hip-hop". I thought it was interesting enough, in a style-over-substance kind of way. I kinda liken it to The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds; sure, they might be seminal, influential albums but that doesn't mean you ever need to actually listen to them ever again Plus, you have to take into account that he's from the UK, it's not as if they're spoilt for choice over there

Ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance only hides the truth. And the longer that truth has to hide, the more it stings when it makes itself known.

Yeah... I can hear that. It's all a matter of taste, I suppose.

Actually, much of what I like is the campy/unusual nature of the vocals...

I don't like "Original Pirate Material", but "A Grand don't come for free" is a pretty decent album. What impresses me is the way Mike manages to take the ordinary and mundane and put it into a song. These are everyday songs for everyday people, stuff about your phone battery dying, flirting with girls or arguing with someone in the pub about the dangers of cannabis against the dangers of alcohol.
Funnily enough that's what I don't like about his stuff the whole "I went to the shops bought some chips, got a text from Bob. Went home and watched eastenders" Sure it's real life but real life in general is pretty mundane when spoken about so literally

But you are right about that dangers of cannabis against the dangers of alcohol song that was quite interesting.

Anyway I'll shut up now.

Being in the States has thankfully shielded me from them, but Youtube'ing them made me throw up in my mouth a little. They almost make me like Dizzee Rascal.
