It doesn't diminish any of the music he's written, but it's easier to appreciate when played by someone as meticulous as Broderick. I guess you can compare it to translating a foreign language; the superiority of Broderick's "Tales Of Phantasia" won't keep you from appreciating Friedman's "Zero Wing"
Taking the ascending run as an example, Friedman is not an alt picker, and I doubt he's not smart enough to realise the way he hammers on through runs like this does not produce the same clinical sound as strict alt picking would.
He knows what results his playing style will yield, and writes what he writes accordingly.
This is not like someone attempting a 32nd note ascending run with alt picking and accidentally picking a few notes twice by mistake.
Your anaology would be analogous if both Broderick andFriedman were playing something written by someone else. But this isn't the case, so the anaology doesn't hold.

"You might as well be suckin' Wes Borland's no-talent dick if you play with any more than six strings on your fucking guitar." - A Blabbermouth genius

That's the thing, though - I don't think that Marty put much thought into the physical techniques of guitar playing; Marty hammers/economy-picks his way through everything and in all honesty I doubt he could alternate-pick most of his stuff if he tried. It'd be stupid to suggest that he would have if he was capable, but I don't think he has the technique to pick and choose. That's not a sleight against him as I don't really care how he does what he does, and I don't think he does either, which was my point. Plus, when I said "sloppy" I mean just that; check out youtube sometime for dozens of examples of Marty struggling with his own stuff. Oh well
