Anyone ever listened to Nefilim?

Very cool band, who only released one album back in 1996, and most people have never heard of.

It's Carl McCoy from Fields of the Nephilim, who started the band after FotN had broken up, but I guess they just got buried because of what a rapid change of sound McCoy had taken, so kind of alienated a lot of fans, while at the same time, the metal community never latched onto them. But pretty kickass none the less.

Also has to be said that I've always thought Carl has some of the best growling vocals I've ever heard.

odd you say that, was just discussing this with someone whilst i opened the screen to find this thread.

it’s a can of worms not necessarily worth me opening, but i’m afraid i’m something of a super-fan, given that i based frankly a huge amount of the person i am as a singer on mccoy. i’m afraid i know all the niddly stupid things about fields and associated side projects.

this sound was slightly revisited in a album that followed it that was suggested to be FotN re-forming, which it wasn’t. sadly, it wasn’t quite as heavy, but it was reminiscent.

you know how people can be holy about certain artists? i’m like that about mccoy. all apologies, but in my opinion the majority of the man’s delivery in his career has been perfect.

tell you what, it’s an ambition of mine to have an album’s artwork designed by mccoy’s company, sheer faith.

of course, the ultimate would be to have him produce something i do and / or have him even appear on it, but that would involve actually meeting the guy, and i’m not sure i could handle that.

What a coincidence!

I'm not sure I can relate to the fanatic devotion Hal, but I will say he's always been one of my favourite vocalists.

sure. i guess it’s just a case of everyone being influenced in some way or another, and i was at a certain age (13) that listening to fields really had a huge effect. it was at the same time i discovered LSD and black metal and loads about myself, plus falling in love blah blah blah, so these sort of things leave an indelible effect, you know?

Another huuuuuuuuuuuge fan of the Fields here. 'Zoon' has been on virtually constant rotation on my CD and mp3 players since I first heard it...such an underrated record. Incidentally, it's been a huge influence on Behemoth's recent stuff; according to Nergal, it's one of his favourite albums.

Here's an absolutely fascinating analysis of the lyrics (especially so if you're into Sumerian mythology)...

Nephilim Reborn: Zoon

Hal, have you read Storm Constantine's 'Grigori' books?

Big fan here, too, that old "Second Wave Of Goth" scene had a huge impact on me, that wacky world with Sisters Of Mercy, Fields, even the Mission and All About Eve...
