Red face Music Boredom

So resently i've gotten very bored listening to music. IDK. I just bought Meshuggah Obzen and DEI, listened the hell out of them, been listening to Soilwork-Sworn to a great divide, and In Flames-Jester Race. for some reason it's all beggining to sound the same to me, and i'm getting bored. I still want to listen to music, but i'm just not getting the same effect anymore, everything sounds the same.

I'm starting to get the same problem writing too. I just can't tell whats a good riff anymore, and whats so-so. I still have a strong urge to play, but i'm just not feelin it. What should i do?

...cool

Try listening to some different, non-metal music.

RIP MIKE

Try listening to some non-metal music. Also you could try try and take a complete breake from music in general and get into the other arts(either making or looking at) drawing, painting, sculpture, etc. Try watching movies or reading books.

A very similar thing happened to me a year or two ago... I'm not sure I'm "cured" yet, since I don't feel 100% when writing songs, but music inspires me again.

I also think listening to different things will help you.

In my case, I listened to too much death metal and grindcore bands... Now I'm more into progressive metal and grindcore, like Psyopus, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah, Textures, Ion Dissonance (first album is cool), Behold... the Arctopus, Pig Destroyer, and Baroness.

I think the problem with music in general is when bands start to copy each others... That really kills the spirit of art, and destroys music, which made me become disappointed with music in general.

I go through similar swings in taste all the time. My main musical taste lies in Electronic music, but every once in a while, usually when a new sound has become mainstream (ZOMG I needs my beatz all glitchy and stutter edits everywhere!), and then I make a conscious effort to listen to different styles of music, old jazz, metal, classical... it's like the little piece of bread you have between wine tastings, it cleanses the palate.

"Listen closely to me now, my darlin' girl...
There's one who's out to have you, and just his breath will burn your curls..."

When that happened to me awhile back, I started listening to jazz full time and became sort of a jazz musician by default. It happens. The beneficial side effect of widening your musical horizons is that your own playing becomes more unique.
