So, I get a call this morning from a wood mill that I frequent alot.

"Hey Mike, you remember when I asked your advise on how I should cut those logs two years ago? We cut it, and stuck it in the kiln right after you were here.
It`s been stacked in the back for about a year and half now, and we finally worked our way back to to it........I figured I would give you first crack at it?"

My reply, hmmm.......how much yield did you end up with?

"I think enough to keep you happy for a while"

My reply, Ok, send it over!

His delivery guy shows up this afternoon with a crazy stack of 10' long boards of this:
300 bd. ft. of 5-A quartersawn Curly Maple.
A few random samples.

And another crazy stack of this:
350 bd. Ft. of some wicked African Mahogany, also in 10' lengths.

No knots, mineral streaks, or bug holes in any of it.
The most consistant figured, and cleanest wood I have seen in a long time.

It was a good day

I'm no luthier, but that looks like some rather nice wood.

Something I've always wondered: is the "A" system of grading Maple a universal measure, or just a rough guide? I can't really see how wood can be graded quantifiably on its aesthetics to be honest, so I'm assuming its the latter.

One can only imagine what that looks like with some kind of finish on it to make that grain pop...

No worries, there is about 150 bookmatched tops worth of maple with that figure.
