Yeah I too thought it sounded rather "generic/safe" (radio friendly even?) and I enjoyed the last few discs. So I was rather shocked that this one did nothing for me.

Yeah the guitar tone is a bit....... different. It's flat, and quite 'oomph'less at first but i've found that the more you listen to it the more it settles in quite well. I like it

but i'm not a HUGE in flames fan anyway, i just like them

I am not an old In Flames fan, nor I will be a new In Flames fan if this is the music they are putting out.

There is no passion in this stuff, it feels like "guys, we NEED to make an album" rater than "Guys, I have all these awesome ideas, let's make some songs".

The songs are very predictable and in my opinion, this is not what an evolvin band does. It's like they have regressed and given up. Pop-metal is what comes to mind.

The sound, well, it is hard to say anything because of the myspace stream, but sounds very boring and safe with no-edge.

But, however, this is only my opinion, and if you like it, then good for you.

My first exposure to In Flames was Soundtrack To Your Escape. It was literally the first 'extreme metal' album I ever bought. From there I went on to metalcore/NWOAHM bands like Lamb of God, Shadows Fall and Unearth. I was reading a review for "The Oncoming Storm" and the reviewer said that "Zombie Autopilot" reminded him of "Zombie Inc." by In Flames, so I downloaded it. Blown away. INSTANTLY thought that it was WAAAY better than anything from STYE. Remains my favorite IF song from my favorite IF album to this day. That was the first album that put me on the path of righteousness to true metal.

Just listened to it. I love their single, very catchy. Other than that the album doesn't do much for me. I kind of felt the same way about come clarity

Is "sober and irrelevant" about them?

I don't dig it. But then again, I just bought Claymen, and really didn't dig it either. I liked Come Clarity though.. but I would still very much rather listen to Lamb of God or Unearth.
