My point exactly. I believe the original context was that Horowitz was ranting in a mid-80s interview about how didn't care for certain composers, and he singled out Beethoven, claiming he couldn't compose. Pogorelich came out in response saying "That's ok, I don't think Beethoven cares about Horowitz, either." "Twas in an old Keyboards article, 87-ish or so... no one needs to subscribe to anyone's views, all that matters is personal enjoyment.

I think the whole hard man image as a justification for how good or how 'metal' a band is, is false.

The entire point kids back in the 80's started up metal and thrash bands was because they didnt want to be part of an image driven fest.

You only have to look at the last page of the Amon Amarth 'world on fire' or what ever it was thread to see a thin justification for the vikingness of Amon Amarth.

But hay, what would i know i have a number one, wear shorts, smell generally clean, dont have any tattoos or pearcings or facial hair...

Metal is metal. Alot of people here mention bands that fall into the metalcore. Metalcore isn't metal. Get over it.

To the people that bitch and moan about someone saying a band isn't metal, it probably isn't. Don't get offended when we tell you As I lay Dying isn't metal, because it isn't. It's metal influenced hardcore. Much like early rock music was blues influenced country in alot of respects.

Also, Muhammad is cool, but he is definitely overrated. Necrophagist gets really boring after awhile because he uses the same song structure for almost every song.

I remember when only falsetto singing and having two guitarists was metal.

I remember when only spandex, bleached hair, and speed licks were metal.

I've known people who said only anti-Christian bands were metal.

I've known people who said only English-speaking bands were metal.

I've known people who said that only caucasian bands, or bands that headbanged (is that a word), or hell, only non-gay people were metal.


They were all wrong. There are a few things needed to get close to the definition, and a lot of bands are blurring the lines, but I say Fuck it, bring it on! Bring in the new blood, and let's smear it all around!




An aside... Rob Halford has (almost) always had short hair (until he went totally bald) and is gay, and sings like a motherfucker. Damn straight he's as metal as it gets. We need a fucking Halford Smiley!!

As I said earlier, metalcore is metal influenced hardcore because of their breakdowns. It's not metal, just a variant of hardcore (and more reciently post-hardcore/emo).

Long hair is a part of metal as cowboy hats and nascar are to country fans. Not exclusive, but definitely part of the culture.

then again , if i may be a little bit hypocritical ,

if i'm going out to a metal show and i see a band setting up that i've never heard before ... and if i see every member of the band with curtain length hair , tattoos , piercings , combat boots and a ridiculously beefy vocalist ... i'm going to expect some good death metal.

and if they're playing seven string guitars , the immediately get my respect
