Vai, and Satriani are progressive rock. Malmsteen is neo-classical metal. I like some of Vai's stuff (FTLOG mostly, can't really get into much of is other stuff). Satriani haven't given much of a listen too, but what I've heard off youtube, I don't like. Malmsteen is ok, but overrated. Yes, I have heard those songs by Necrophagist. They're not that great. I liked them for a week, then I discovered much better stuff. If you listen, just about everyone of their songs use the same song format. It really gets boring after awhile.

Yes, yes, it's true that technicality does not automatically mean it's metal, in the same way that a shuffle beat doesn't automatically make it blues. On the other hand, this is a board full of wanker guitarists dedicated to outside-the-box wankery so it's no surprise that there is a great appreciation of those musicians who are technical. If this was Downtuned-Droptuned-Sixstring.org, then you might find technique less important, but...

Unfortunately for you guys, the most famous 7 strings excluding Vai all just play detuned garbage. The whole Nu metal/alt metal thing.

Down tuned 6's are cool, as long as used well. Check out some Nile(drop A), Carcass(B Standard), and Demilich (A Standard). Most extreme metal band use downtuned guitars (6 string usually).

(1) I would normally agree with you but you have completely missed the point of my post and gone off on some odd tangent. But as a partial reply you are even incorrect about that. Perhaps I like the sound of a guitarist playing very low, heavy chords while another guy solos high over the top. The kind of thing that (ironically enough) seven-strings are capable of.

(2) You have once again dodged the question and started talking about how you do or do not like an artists music.

(3) If by Alt-Metal you mean bands like Faith No More then yes Alt-Metal is metal and to say that Alt-Metal isn't metal is like saying Rammstein and Fear Factory are not metal.

(4) You are clearly referring to KoRn here. The term "garbage" is subjective. I happen to think that KoRn has made some of the most original music in a long time and has approached the guitar as an instrument in ways that were never previously explored. I don't believe that they are the musical equivalents of jesus or anything but they were unique and experimental.
