Metal has most definitely adopted its own putrid form of snobbery in the past few years. Since the mainstream use of the internet really, where Warhammer fans who live in their mums basement at 46 can have a say for the first time in their life. It's stupid really, because in the same vein as punk, it's supposed to be a "fuck everything" rebellious musical art, or at least that's how it started out. But instead it's turned into an avant-garde sensationalist competition,

so in an ironic twist the people who are complaining that things aint "tr00" are the ones that have forgotten their roots.

I hate the elitist shit in metal. The 'you're not metal if you don't have long hair, smell of beer, think the first slayer album is the only slayer album and think anything in the past 20 years isn't worth listening too unless it's an incredibly boring doom metal band' attitude. Music is music. I don't like alot of music but if I think a band is great then i'll listen to it regardless of genre (but I draw the line at most chart music, that shit bores me and holds no substance).

In the last few years? This shit has been going on, in one form or another, since "metal" really became a distinct music form in the early '80s, and got much worse thanks to the record companies and MTV deciding that Bon Jovi was "Heavy Metal" - and then deciding that Soundgarden and Nirvana were, too, when they were the next "big thing". There was the inevitable backlash from the long-time fans, and then the '90s (and early aughts) were simply spent trying to find who could out-extreme everyone else, no matter how bad it actually sucked.

Some semblance of actual sense has turned up in the last few years, but there's still a bullshit filter to be applied...
