I don't know about the american scene but the swedish animal rights movement and hardcore had very strong ties, both the militant animal liberation and the more peaceful animals right lobbyist.
About 95% of the hardcore bands that came around 90-97 where vegans or sXe.

I shouldn't whine though, bands like Shadows Fall, Lamb of God and Killswitch Engage were gateway bands for me, and there was a time when I loved them, but I can hardly stand them now, especially Killswitch Engage. I can't really dig some of the more 'artistic' metalcore bands either, such as Dillinger Escape Plan. Plus, the very existance of Norma Jean makes me doubt the existance of God. There's letting people suffer, and then there's Norma Jean.

Hmm.

I like metalcore... but then, I like numetal... and I liked thrash...

See, here's the thing: in general, music (as well as many other art-elements of pop culture) swings between periods of establishment and change. There aren't hard barriers, and often the movement is happening differently in different cultural segments, but if you look at any particular segment over time, the patterns become clear.

Whatever the established sound is, most will follow it. After a time, new styles/sounds will start to emerge; these new sounds will almost always be cross-genre blends. Eventually, one or more of these will become the new established sound, and the cycle begins again.

There are bands in every genre, at every period point, who make good music. I, personally, tend to prefer the bands at the forefront of creating new sounds, the ones who more obviously cross genres and combine good elements from a variety of styles.

So bands like Death Angel, Metallica (I've liked everything except St Anger, and that was just poorly done)... through bands like Nirvana, Sevendust, Korn, Flaw, 3rd Strike, RHCP... and hardcore/metalcore bands like KsE, Most Precious Blood, God Forbid. My favorites also tend to be those that bring an element of punk or funk, but that's just me.

What folks seem to forget (or so it seems to me) is that the bands we look back on as being an established sound to base further exploration on were, in their own time, creating new sounds by incorporating different elements themselves. Bands like the Beatles, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath... further back to Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis... in fact, all music has evolved this way.

So from my own personal standpoint, I don't bother slamming an entire genre. I'll happily slam the me-too poseurs who follow the latest trend just because it's there, but that's easy since they generally make mediocre music at best! For me, there is good music and bad, good bands and bad... if it's good, I like it, whatever the current status of the genre they may be in.

Except pop-country. That stuff just sucks.

(kidding! well... mostly... )

I'm curious... for those of you who hate metalcore... what do you like? What genres do you like, and why?

My favoutite genre is bands like Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, All That Remains, Lamb Of Gd, God Forbid, As I lay Dying, Chimaira, Unearth, Darkest Hour, are these metalcore? Id previously heard them all described as NWOAHM (New Wave Of American Heavy Metal) which Metalcore was bands like corrosion of conformity, suicidal tendencies, machine head, black flag etc., is there a right or wrong answer here?

But TBH at the end of the day, I really dont think it matters what label you give a band, if they sound good in your opinion, then so what?!

I like stuff from all kinds of genres. Anything that catches me as being good music, really. There's not a hell of a lot that I won't at least give a chance except for rap and country western. Even there, I think elements of those genres have their appropriate places to shine, even if the genres as their respective wholes blow chunks (IMO). I'm not even entirely opposed to loving a metalcore band, but Demon Hunter is as close as it has come for me thus far. I just dislike most of the genre because very little of it strikes me as being good music. It's arguably heavy, sure, and most of it definitely has a beat and some energy to it, but I rarely hear a hell of a lot more going on. I usually like my music to make me feel something, and metalcore makes me feel nothing. This is the same gripe I have with a lot of the more extreme genres of metal.

I think you've got your genres mixed up a little bit. Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying, Chimaira, and Unearth are metalcore (Unearf is one of the metalcore bands I don't mind so much). God Forbid and Darkest Hour are metalcore/melodeath. Shadows Fall and Lamb of God are probably technically closer to American metal or thrash, but they're often considered metalcore as well since they have some similar elements. So to your first question, yeah, the short answer is that those bands are all more or less metalcore. That NWOAHM label might only really apply to LoG (who I like) and maybe SF.

Corrosion of Conformity has been called American heavy hetal, progresive metal, and sludge, but not really metalcore. Suidical Tendencies is somewhere between thrash and hardcore punk (which is where metalcore has its true roots, but ST is far from metalcore). I think Machine Head is nu-metal/thrash. Black Flag is straight up hardcore punk.

I don't guarantee 100% accuracy on these classifications, but I think that's at least close.

I agree with the sentiment that all that really matters in the end is whether or not the music is good, but for the purposes of this thread, genre lines are kind of important

Can't stand it, the boring chugga breakdowns in every song, the wanna-be At The Gates vocals, the overused sweep-picked solos, the way the fans think they're thrash bands, etc.

I generally can't get into metalcore at all. I recognize the individual talents of the musicians in some of the bands, but it's just way too formulaic and unoriginal for my tastes.

The boring breakdowns are really what amuse me the most. It's getting to the point where I can spot one coming a mile away and then just laugh as the "C--0---00-----0----------------------0---" stuff ensues for the next 2 minutes. Breakdowns can be fun, but these guys just don't do them in a fun or interesting way at all. The lack of imagination really is shocking to me sometimes.

In conclusion, I understand the appeal, some of it catchy, but it's just not my cup of tea at all. Just not dark or edgy enough.
