My all-time favorite 'metalcore' band is Lamb of God. If they didn't have breakdowns, I wouldn't even consider them Metalcore. I also enjoy KsE and All That Remains..they fucken rule

personally, i do not care if anybody listens to metalcore or not - but nowadays metalcore is something i really hate. at almost every riff i hear i have a feeling like "yeah, sounds familiar...i know this from at the gates/death/bolt thrower/<insert good death metal band here> and they did this 15 years ago, and way better." i feel like i've already heard every breakdown, every "melodic death"-riff which these bands use, and there are waaaaayyyy too much of them, and every label signs these bands and every week tons of metalcore cds are released and every single one sounds the same as they sounded 3,4 years ago. some of these bands recognize that they are lame and start doing thrash metal (trivium for example)...some did thrash metal and do now lamest metalcore (shadwos fall).

i was really into hardcore and ealry "metalcore" in the middle and late 90s, but bands sounded a little bit different than they do now. if somebody is interrested in the "first" bands of this, he should check out day of suffering, morning again, the year of our lord, overcast, aftershock (overcast and aftershock members are nowadays KSE and shadows fall) - which were all great.

what i wanted to say is: there is nothing new in metalcore, just now it has the attention of the mainstream and is bigger than ever, but there is a complete overflow on bands/releases//tours/concerts and the whole movement will shrinke time after time and/or again divide (as it already started) into a few "subgenres" like this screamo-thing / metalcore with swedish melodic death metal touch - thing / tough guy-beatdown etc.etc. and also of course shrink back because most of nowadays fans are like new metal fans - they are here as long as it is big. if its gone, they are gone, and if they are gone, metalcore is gone (*). it will go back to the clubs and time after time it will be completely dead.

(*) because most of the metalcore-fans i know gave me the impression that they are more like radio-listeners and a totally different kind of "fan" as a metal-head (for example) where most of the real metalfans are complete dedicated for life and metalcore fans are like disco-guys who are just listening to the band which is in trend at the moment.

to relativise this a little bit (the above may have sounded harsh/offending to some users): of course i cannot judge every single metalcore-fan, this is just an overall impression that i have and i'm sure there are also a lot of people into metalocre who are the complete opposite of what i wrote...

sorry for a borring essay in crappy english , just my 2 cents.

Some of it's really catchy, and I can't help but like it, but as zimbloth said, my favorite thing to do is predict breakdowns haha. One of my friends is a hardcore kid, and really all he listens to is the deathcore/metalcore stuff, so he'll come to me every few days with a new band. He says they're "unique" and different and likes to incorrectly use the word "harmonization" (The word you're looking for is unison, bud), yet they all sound the same and I can predict the breakdowns and sometimes even the song structure.

I wish I could get the hell out of the metalcore riff phase of my guitar playing..I barely even listen to it, and yet, that's all that I can play?

Funny you mention Heaven Shall Burn. I just got a gig offer to open up for them in NJ lol! I fuckin love em'. I'd consider them more melodic death metal though.

There's a fine line between Melodic Death Metal and Metalcore. Most of it has to do with the types of vocals. then you have Deathcore which I'm still trying to figure out 100% myself. but i have a general idea... i think hahaha

Well, trends come, a few bands do something a lot of people like, record companies see this, and the flood the market with a crapload of bands that pander to said formula, and then, as if by magic, because of the oversaturation, there's a cull, and only the strong survive.

It happened with 80's glam/sleaze, thrash, death metal, black metal, grunge, nu-metal and will happen with metalcore.

Nothing new, just the way it works.

Oh, and i do like the odd track here and there, but like so much, it's become more and more about repeating the formula really.

I'll listen to it, and enjoy a lot of it.

I'm a huge fan of Killswitch Engage (new stuff is shite compared to Alive or Just Breathing, but its still great metalcore at it's finest) and I listen to snippets here and there of other bands.

The thing I cannot get over is how much albums by these bands suck. All that Remains, Nodes of Ranvier, It Dies Today, Still Remains...all these bands have FANTASTIC songs, but listening to the albums are a depressing experience. Every song sounds the same. They all sound washed up and formulaically carbon copied.

And the breakdown thing grows ever tiresome. My band uses them. But we use them to impart an extra bit of heaviness on songs, and out of an 8 song setlist we have two - and we even questioned about putting that many in. They have to fit the music rather than making the music.
