The album is great, the strategy was brilliant, it worked

I bought the $10 2 CD set.

He's is merely proving that record companies are not needed when you have the power of the internet, the true kicker will be if an unknown unsigned band can pull this off, since there are many people that would eat a pile of Trents shit just to get new music from him.

Really, what about NIN is not mainstream (talking sales and installed fanbase, not necessarily airplay)? As far as marketing, we already have perfectly good examples from other well known bands about how to market. The marketing model hasn't really changed here, just the distrubution model (this is where, IMO, Niggy Stardust failed, Trent didn't follow the standard marketing model. There was no Raise, Focus, and Release that a new artist HAS to have in order to effectively market). Trent, in treating his new release much like merch, is proving EXACTLY what I've been saying for months now, that (a.) people will pay for something tangible, touchable, and real, as opposed to a mere download which, arguably, isn't really a thing, and (b.) given the level of knowledge the average person has about the music industry, people (on a belief/perceptional level) WILL steal from a label, BEFORE they steal from an artist, only because they KNOW that the labels are screwing the artists anyway.

What amazes me even more, is that, apparently, many established artists (Metallica, Dave Ellefson I'm looking at you.....) have not figured this out yet, since they are obviously very content with calling their fans "thieves", thus proving to me that they really don't understand their "fans" at all. The level of disconnect that these musicians and their music business "sheperds" have is appalling, but it's also explains (at least to me) why the fans are abandoning them in droves.

Clearly a new band is NOT going to have these numbers out of the gates, but just the ideal that a band who is willing to work can raise a sustainable business, using common tools, is incredibly exciting to me.

The music business is going back to where it should have been, the survival of talented, all I can say is Thank God.

I think we both know what I mean, but ten points for being a smart-arse.

to be honest, it's something we've been discussing in interlock concerning the release of 'parasite'.

it's still fairly daunting being about a 150th the size of anything reznor touches.

Vision is a jewel in the rough
On his last album, Trent was asking a record exec why his album was priced so much higher than everyone else's. The exec said "The fancy cover/artwork/insert/etc.." Trent said... "No.... I paid out of my own pocket for that. Give me the real reason." The exec said "Its because we know your fans will pay extra for it."

So Trent goes into a concert and says ""Has anyone seen the price come down? Okay, well, you know what that means - STEAL IT. Steal away. Steal and steal and steal some more and give it to all your friends and keep on stealin'. Because one way or another these motherfuckers will get it through their head that they're ripping people off and that that's not right."

This was a great move by him, and I hope more bands do the same.

Strictly speaking, for $5 a copy (yeah, I know that's not the deal...just sayin')...at $1.6M, he's moved 320,000 copies.

Don't think for a second the majors, mid-majors, and even indies won't notice this....

I was told today that apparently the Wall Street Journal mentioned this and stated that people in the music industry (unsigned artists included) could learn from his example

It's true. At this point, I buy more CDs directly through peoples online stores than I do in actual record stores.
