Does this infuriate anyone else?

I stopped buying guitar magazines a while ago but saw one the other day that had a "50 greatest tones ever" feature. i picked it up out of curiosity, only to find: jack white and kurt cobain in the top 10. vai and satch down in the 30s somewhere, and not a single mention of petrucci. WTF???

his grating tone hurts my ears, in fact it's almost blasphemous calling that noise he coaxes an amp to create "tone"

Doesn't surprise me one bit. Doesn't make me angry, either. I just don't waste my energy on worrying about musician mags' journalistic integrity anymore, that all died in the early 90s when the industry realized that musicians buy albums, too.

Petrucci, and to a lesser extent Satch, have the safest, most vanilla tones going. Sure, they're extremely well-done, but vanilla nonetheless. I kinda dug that White Stripes song "Icky Thump" and those random god-awful lead breaks; at first I thought he was being audacious but now I can see he plays with absolute conviction, which is... uhh, encouraging?

I don't get mad over shit like that since it's pretty typical of guitar magazines to put together BS 'Greatest ____' lists and give certain musicians way more credit than they really should get. People still buy into it all though... pretty sad on both ends.

The only guitar magazine that's got decent information is Guitarplayer. Guitarworld sucks donkey balls. Every damn month, you see either Dimebag, Slash, Jimi Hendrix, or Zakk Wylde on the cover.
