I actually first heard of this band when they were Nu metal. I didn't like what i heard (even though i listened to some Nu metal at the time) and stayed away for years. Then I heard their first two discs . As for newer Machine Head, the only tune i really like is Imperium while the rest is kinda average sounding.

T'was tartar killed the beast.

Realised it sucked and decided to go back to making straight up metal albums like before.

Their last 2 albums have been fucking fantastic, and this is coming from someone who listens to mostly death metal like nile and hate eternal.

I hate this stupid logic that anytime a metal band changes style its because they are 'going for the money' Guess what folks, THERE IS NO MONEY IN MUSIC especially not when your a bunch of ugly bastards from the bay area thrash scene.

If you dont like it fine its music afterall, but lets not go down the road of calling a band bandwagon whores just because they change style.
You've failed to sway my opinion.

Everything I've heard from them has been unoriginal and boring.

Which gives me the impression that they just do what everyone else is doing at the time.

burn my eyes is original, for the time. the only reason you probably think it isn't is because it's been a blueprint for that type of metal for years.
I love Chimaira's 'impossibility of reason' but it resonates so hard of 'burn my eyes' it's unreal

This is true but which of those 4 bands are still around?

What youv said is exactly right. I just find bashing machinehead for being trend followers or 'bandwagon whores' is a bit stupid seeing they have been around a long time and have a huge fan base. Im not saying everyone should like them because its music and its subjective. But i think that changing your sound is not something people should be resented for if you dont like the music say so, but metal fans seem all to keen to find some sort of hidden agenda for changing style like 'omg they are going for the money' 'theyr trying to appeal to more people etc'. Why dont people just accept that not every band is like slayer and going to write the same album every album for 26 years

Yeah i'm with Nick on this. Despite the fact that i started this thread! But i do personally see this vid as their only downfall. Not even the song, or indeed the burning red album, just this video. Yeah it was a dark patch, but it was a dark patch for metal in general.
Ok, so machine head weren't innovators in the neo-thrash groove scene, but they were damn good exponents of it. In exactly the same way that Testament came waaaay after the formation of thrash, but that by no means means they weren't amazing at it.
I think machine heads genre-weaving is just their way of finding themselves. they had loads of line-up changes, and they just happened to be unlucky enough to have a career in that shit period of metal. You can tell that what they're doing now is what they've always really wanted to do, it would've just been completely ignored had they done it any earlier.
