Hmmm.

See, first off, I don't have a reflexive hatred of numetal or things touched by non-European influences. So I didn't mind that song at all, stylistically. It was kinda... well. Hmmm.

I'm not a big follower of Machine Head, so my perception may be off-base. On the other hand, sometimes distance can help you see more clearly... and ignorance is clearly the beginning of wisdom. So, I wonder if Machine Head - or the lead singer at least - is just a guy with a really wide, varied musical taste. He hears stuff he likes, and incorporates it into his music. For example, in that last video, the only real difference in the vocals was the slower pace and distortion (organic, of course ). If you notice, the subject matter isn't that much different, and the rhythm and pitches of the words are much more rap-like than the more fluid (in a sense) lines of death metal, or the more staccato lines of hardcore/metalcore.

My $0.02 anyway.

Perhaps a way to look at Machine Head is not as a bastion of a certain sub-genre, but a constant experiment in what's going on in heavy music.

Woooooooah. That's quite shocking. I had no idea they ever jumped on the nu metal wagon before. Nu metal hair styles and clothes, nu metal-style music video (with the depressed nu metal pseudo-goth club goers), nu metal style rapping, and even a little bit of nu metal style guitar in there. I had no idea...

I´m actually shocked to see that you guys are shocked about Machine Head´s nu-metal flirting phase.

That video was on MTV all the time in 1999, at least here in Brazil it received a great amount of airplay.

I actually watched MTV quite a bit in 1999 and I never once saw that music video.

Of course, different countries show different videos. I was surprised when I found out that almost no one in Japan had ever heard of Third Eye Blind but that some American bands I'd never even heard of had 2 hit singles on Japanese MTV and bands that were popular in the US were popular in Japan but that completely different songs were popular.

I guess you shouldn't be "shocked." Maybe "mildly surprised" would be more appropriate.

Yeah, that´s what I intended to say!! I´m surprised, but I used the shocked thing as a pun!

Speaking of different countries playing different videos. Can you believe that Korn wasn´t played here in 1998? Yeah, in 1998 OFFSPRING was all the rage here in Brazil! LOL! Probably the only country who remembered they existed.

But yeah, Machine Head´s nu-metal phase is embarassing, I admit, I like the tunes, but the video is so awful it hurts.
