I think some other genres could benefit from it . . . if they'd try it.
Grim, raw, underproduced neofolk? Sounds good to me!

I like black metal, but mainly the bands that are actually good, not them who record to cassette to get better sound etc. and are so "KVLT" it's ridiculous. For example, I love Ulver, but I still don't like their second album because I can't listen to it.

The funniest people are those teens who've just got into Cradle of Poop and are walking around in corpsepaint all day. Especially in the summer, when their faces start to "melt"

I play in a band that does have some Black Metal elements (or post-black would be more like it), as it's Avant-Garde Metal. Many say we sound like Arcturus, and it's true.

I'm not into avante-garde music, but arcturus is an awesome band...as far as black metal goes I love the folk black metal

I also saw that someone mentioned Behemoth, Their only good album IMO is Zos Kia Cultus, and thats more of a death metal album

I'm not against the kvlt stuff at all. It's just not my absolute favorite 'flavor', of black metal. If I had to choose between something kvlt sounding and something more dimmu-ish, my money would be on the latter. But they are both cool in their own way. I can undertand the idea of a more 'raw' being perfered to a more 'polished' sound. Anything black metal(ish) I do falls in the middle, maybe just leaning slightly towards kvlt.

I love black metal, from Dimmu Borgir (great production) to Burzum (raw style) to Cradle Of Filth (Gothic Black Metal) to Satyricon (New Age Black Metal) and MANY more...

This is my horribly produced black metal band.....

I can listen black metal, but is kinda boring after some minutes. I liked a lot Burzum in a moment, Varg can make me feel better with his music.

I like the "new" era of "black metal" or most know as goth metal or black gothic metal, what Cradle and Dimmu makes.

I have been analizing Nymphetamine and it's a sickass album.

Black Metal is the shit. I listen to the second wave mostly (Darkthrone, Emperor, Immortal, Mayhem, etc.).

The first wave was cool. One can never go wrong w/ Venom or Celtic Frost.

The best band in the first wave (and in my eyes, one of the greatest metal bands of all time) was Bathory. With out Bathory, there would be no Black Metal (as far as I'm conserned). A lot of old Death & Thrash metal bands owe Bathory homage for their sound too.

When it comes to the third wave, I'm kinda picky. Some of the Dark Funeral stuff is cool, along w/ Setharial (sp?), but since there are so many damn third wave bands, it's hard to keep up.

Finally, we have American Black Metal. One of the finest bands from the US is Xasthur. They are a lot like Burzum since they're both led by one guy, and their sounds/production are alike. I suggest giving Xasthur a listen.

Well, not 23 times, you'll actually fall in some broken glass. But they will stab you.

. . . if you didn't catch that joke, you're not a blackmetaller

Unless you're trying to find out if they're actually a black metaller. If they don't at least pause awkwardly for a moment when you say you like Dimmu and Cradle, or worse yet if they're enthusiastic about it, they're not black metallers.
Well the good news is I'm not out to fit nicely into one label. I like a lot of different kinds of metal. To me, people who would frown upon me for liking Dimmu or old Cradle really don't understand what makes music work. Well written music is well written music, regardless of genre.

It makes no sense that it's frowned upon to actually hear the instruments clearly and use decent equipment. Are these bands against playing live too? Do they run filters through the PA system so everything sounds like murky fizzy garbage? I'm sorry, but these bands would sound a lot more grim and blasphemous if you could actually hear what's going on.

If Dimmu Borgir is lame because they sound huge and epic, and not like inside of a tin can, then I guess so be it

dimmu's old stuff isn't high quality produced. since they have become a bigger band in mainstream music they have released their older stuff with much better production....and the bands that play live and raw, they use very high gain and a lot of reverb...those settings are like at 11 lol it gives the music a dark hollow eery type of sound IMO
