I'm into symphonic black metal like Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Chthonic, old Cradle of Filth, etc.

I'm not criticizing people who like 'true' black metal, I just am saying I can't get into any music that has atrocious production. It's impossible to enjoy if it sounds like it was recorded with a Casio hand-held tape recorder.

I don't mind the music, I'd probably love most of those bands such as Darkthrone and the like if they just prioritized the music over the the amateur recording aesthetic. What would add to the grim and frostbitten atmosphere more is if you could actually hear the sinister soundscapes and riffs in a more 3-D palette.

Just my opinion.

Chthonic eh? I'll have to check them out.

I agree Zim, there's some really cool stuff going on in Darkthrone's music, but I just can't sit and listen to it because of the production. If they put more time into it they'd probably be one of my favorite black metal bands.

RIP MIKE

Hmm.
I actually can't listen to some stuff if the production is too clean - it bothers me. Reminds me of crap radio music. Examples: Dimmu Borgir, In Mourning . . .
There's really cool stuff in Darkthrone? Gah! That's the most simplistic, repetitive music on the planet!
*dies*
Note: Never say you listen to Dimmu or Cradle to a black metaller. They'll stab you.
23 times.
Well, not 23 times, you'll actually fall in some broken glass. But they will stab you.

. . . if you didn't catch that joke, you're not a blackmetaller

Unless you're trying to find out if they're actually a black metaller. If they don't at least pause awkwardly for a moment when you say you like Dimmu and Cradle, or worse yet if they're enthusiastic about it, they're not black metallers.

I absolutely can not stand darkthrone. Not even the best production could save them in my opinion.

10 Minutes
4 Riffs.
ONE SONG.

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

Yay for Metal Ken
There's some very repetitive black metal floating around. All over the place. One band we opened for locally some time ago (former band of Nachtmystium's Blake Judd) is mindbogglingly gah: I and my mate were the only ones of the Velnias group who left before their set, and the rest of the group were horribly jealous of us afterwards . The overwhelmingly consistent review of their set was "Two hours, one riff."

Rep to anyone who can figure out (hint: try metal archives) what that band is and post a video (try myspace) of them playing at YOTI (Ye Olde Town Inn) in Mount Prospect, IL.
Hilarious.

Well, the only Darkthrone album I own is Under a Funeral Moon. I think it has some alright stuff on it. It'd actually be enjoyable to listen to if it was produced and performed better, IMO.

Meh. Some like it, some don't.

Though there was the classic moment: Our singer/guitarist was standing during a momentary discussion in rehearsal once, wearing a Darkthrone shirt . . . "I don't like blast beats," he said.

He backpedaled and clarified that he meant he didn't like blast beats used inappropriately, but still.

Peste Noir-Absurd-Nokturnal Mortum are really the best you will find in NSBM.

Aborym's With no Human intervention is great i always thought that it was there deffining moment over Kali Yuga Bizzare.

some of the bands ive been listening to lately have been Mayhem-1349-Celestia-Abgott-limbonic art and koldbrann to name a few.

black metal is one of the very few genre's if not the only where raw or poor production can help spawn some great feeling to the music.
