I thought the show was great when I saw it last month. My only objection was the sound of that new prototype sanded grey/black EVH brand Wolfgang. All the other guitars sounded awesome, but that one was just totally muddy and indistinct.

I have to be pretty damned drunk to play that badly, and I'm no Eddie Van Halen.

That clip from 10 years ago is telling. By all accounts, that tour with Gary Cherone was great musically, even if he was the wrong singer for the gig.

That is EXACTLY what I thought.

He sounds like an absolute beginner who's only been playing for a few months. Between that video and the one Ken posted, it's a difference like night and day. The old video totally rocked. That new one was like, "How'd the 11-year old beginner get on stage?! Where's Eddie?!"

The blabbermouth report I just read mentioned something about an "unspecified medical condition" so he could be legitimately unwell... I mean, he's been diagnosed with (and cured of

) cancer a couple of times now. Someone needs to find a retirement home somewhere, invite EVH and Michael Schenker and then lock the door

Eddie's not *that* old. Certainly not old enough to lose his chops. Of course, the substance abuse does tend to age a person prematurely.

maybe a life time of bad habits have caught with his age. It happens. Its just sad he's still fucking himself up, if he keeps this up i don't think he'll be around all that much longer. I hope he sorts himself out!

Jeff Beck is another hard drinker, but he manages his tendencies - short tours/lower stress, lives like a hermit instead of a "rock star", no exposure/tolerance for asshole singers...

(By the way this "vicioustruth" guy has uploaded all of the Crossroads 2007 shows from a MSN satellite show - it seems like none of the best stuff made it to the DVD?)

Apparently Michael Schenker now is unrecognisable compared to the shambling mess who played recently... my guitar tutor went to see him a couple of weeks ago and said he nailed it.

Back to Eddie. If I was the Fender exec. whose bright idea it was to launch the EVH brand I'd be watching my back (in between bouts of uncontrollable sobbing) right now, just waiting to be told to clear my desk...

Yeah, that "EVH" brand is starting to look like it was mostly designed to keep the line of credit open at the coke dealers for a few more years at least - I wonder just how many $25,000 Frankenstrats they've even sold, considering Eddie won't even play them himself....
