I'd argue that Gorguts aren't too similar to Ion Dissonance (if you listen, its a bit more polyrhythmic than Gorguts) but regardless, you listened to them.

How about The Faceless? Underground to a degree, but their debut release, Akeldama, blew most of us away. Their instrumental track, also named Akeldama, has fantastic elements of Holdsworth and Thordendal in the soloing, and the riffs overall in songs like Pestilence and Horizons of Chaos Part 2: Hypocrisy are so Necrophagist esque, without fear of riffing on that bottom string.

I think I might just have to pick up a copy of GT.

I'm seriously pissed off at the Synyster Gates and Dean fanboyism that goes on in Total guitar. I honestly dont see how Synyster Gates can be shredder of the year, and the Razorback the best metal guitar ever
Guitarist magazine is good, but its not got enough metal stuff IMO.

+1 to Hawksmoor's suggestion of a general metal riffing column, either that or Necrophagist.

Total Guitar used to be excellent about 6-8 years ago, but has degenerated into Smash Hits for teenage mainstream rock fans, and Guitarist is basically a giant gear catalogue that doesn't justify the monthly price tag, although they occasionally pull a decent interview out of the hat.

Total Guitar seems to share a lot of its staff with Metal Hammer, hence the tabloid content, I guess. That being said, their current guest columnists are John 5, Marty Friedman and Alex Skolnick, so until those guys are done I'll probably keep buying. I've also seen some crossover of content between TG and Guitar Techniques, although it's usually good content so I don't mind.

As for the whole licensing thing, I think it's pretty ridiculous that you can transcribe a slightly-altered riff and admit to what you're knocking off but aren't allowed to just post the riff as-is. I mean, aren't there laws for film and such that let you play/include a few seconds of a copyright work without being reprimanded? Surely there should be a similar law in place for music and such. I don't have a clue.

This was the magazine that put both guitarists from lostprophets in their list of 'top 100 guitarists ever'. I think they were ahead of petrucci.....

I used to buy it back when I didn't know any better!

I still buy TG :P A lot of my kids, especially the girls, want to learn exactly what they hear on the radio... I use TG from time to time untill the time has come to pervert them with good taste * kidding*
It's awfull how narrowminded kids are raised these days though, and I'm just 26

Trust your ears.

In life and music, what is is but that doesn't always mean it's what it should. Change, is in our hands.
