Band breakup =( but new lineup!

well there was a fight in my band a few weeks ago, and it sparked it when the bassist and drummer wanted me as lead and the other guitarist/singer as rythm. he asked why and i told him because he doesnt know any scales, and he gave us a speech about how michael ammot and mikael akerfieldt dont know any scales, period. i wanted to laugh, but i didnt want a fist fight. but he left us, and took the bassist. but my drummer and i are in a side project, but i founda new singer, and another guitarist( he has a 7 string!!!!) im tuned down to drop a on my dean, its amazing, and our drummer is......beatcraft. or at least for recording only. but our old song was all of the other guitarist, i didnt hav a say in what happened, only a crappy solo. but this time ill show you guys what im really made out of, low end riffage, songs in the same key, and originality.

Sounds good.

Why is it that lead singers who also play guitar in the band always feel the need to have even more spotlight by playing lead :/

Glad to hear you got out of a band with that guy. That other guitarist sounded like a musically illiterate jackass.

If they can play lead really well, I don't see the problem. I don't play solos too often in my band. Maybe 30-40% of the solos are played by me and 60-70% of the solos are played by the other guitarist and there are parts where he's playing lead guitar while I'm singing and playing rhythm guitar.

Obviously there are some bands where the lead singer is obviously a much better lead guitarist than the other guitarist in the band (definitely not the case in my band).

Of course, if that person doesn't know any scales, they shouldn't be playing solos at all. (And that bizarre quote about Ammott and Akerfeldt not knowing scales is so ridiculous that it should go in the "stupidest things you've heard said about bands/artists" thread).

Yeah, kinda bizarre. I assume Hal is the lead singer for Interlock (he's a member on this forum). But he doesn't play lead guitar in that band - or guitar period.

I don't think Ohio Eric is in a band, so I have no idea which Eric he could be referring to.

But we do all know that Stitch doesn't even have a cock... due to the surgery.

To me it seems like both arguments are not valid, I mean just because you know a bunch of scales doesn't mean you can write a good solo, it's all about creativity, not who knows what scales. I don't mean that in any defamatory way to you. But it does sound like he was a control freak, couldn't you guys have shared leads?

I've never been a fan of officially deciding on "lead" and "rhythm" roles. If you have an idea, play it, if it's good, it'll stick, I don't care who played it.

Hell, if I was in a band and the drummer came up with a guitar riff I liked, I'd be cool with it.

I totally agree with this. If we did that, the other guitarist in the band would get pissed when he introduces a song where he's written out rhythm guitar and a solo and I start writing lead guitar versions over everything for myself to play.

Shared leads can be a great thing. In one of my band's newer songs, there are 4 solos (all short), 3 of them by him and 1 of them by me. In another song, there are 2 solos, one by me and one by him. In other, I play no solos but I play all of the leads in the entire song except the solo which is done by him. In another, he does all the leads and solos in the song except for one at the end done by me.

The guitarist in my band doesn't care, though. He was telling me that I should play the lead guitar at the beginning of one of our songs (that he had written) because our bass player had quit and he was playing bass. It's all for the sake of the music, not for monopolizing rhythm guitar or lead guitar.

Especially if both guitarists have very different lead guitar styles.

But, yeah, like JB said, that guy seemed like a control freak. Just knowing scales isn't going to make you a good lead guitarist, but not knowing any scales at all is going to guarantee that you're not going to be very good at soloing.

Look on the bright side you got a drummer and IMO next to a bassist there the hardest to find
