Hey, Im getting back into Testament and I was wondering the name of the scale he invetned? Its a tone or something, ascending with a pentatonic run then descending with a harmonic minor?

Awesome player, Mr. Skolnick.

Not sure if playing different scales up and down qualifies as 'inventing', though.

Well it creates a sound that is his that no one else thought of before. And if i remember correctly it does create a different presence than just playing the two scales on their own.

Nah , it's the same harmonic-minor stuff I've learned . Anybody can do it , it's one pattern up , and another pattern down .

If my answers frighten you then you should cease asking scary questions.

I remember being taught this in college but i've totally forgotten how it works. Would there be any chance that you can show what patterns these are?

Melodic Minor is melodic minor ascending, natural minor, descending.

If you list your gear in your signature, you're a prick.

He' plays evey year with the TSO tour. I know he's got the bug for metal or rock. It's evident on his Jazz project records ( you can hear him really get into the "zone" when the guitar sound gets dist'd).
Dunno why he just doesn't get back into it..

He wants to be really versatile. He said on an interview on the new Testament DVD if it was able to be workde out where he could do jazz & TSO and be in Testament, he'd rejoin on a permanent basis.

According to my chat with him and Eric back when we played with them in June, there's a really good chance of that happening...

Once you get past the first octave, you can start doing polytonal scales -- that's where it really starts to get interesting ... and bizarre. I agree with the comment that two different scales -- one ascending, the other descending, isn't exactly inventing. IMO, the only truly "inventive" guitar players are those in Allan Holdsworth and Robert Fripp's category.

Well, the thing thats badass about Alex is he takes those regular scales and makes them badass. Especially the solo in Electric Crown.. OMG.
