Interesting Post From Trent Reznor
This was originally on NIN.com but I posted it on my blog, because I know that the post won't be there for long.
Interesting Post From Mr. Reznor « We have such sights to show you… This is pretty disheartening. |

Yeah man, It's just sad that people won't choose to pay $5 for a piece of music.
I almost want to buy Sauls album now, but I wouldn't be able to download it. |

I wouldn't pay $5 for something I downloaded, but I would be willing to pay $10-15 for a CD with the music on it.
(I don't want to pay money for something unless I physically receive something. Just a personal thing, I guess) Of course, if you consider yourself a fan of his work and didn't pay money, it's almost like, "Yeah, I'm a fan, but I want this to be the last album he ever releases." |

I like giving artists money for their work. But I too prefer having a physical CD and booklet and the nice packaging. It's all part of the artwork to me
I really respect Trents efforts, although I worry about the new NIN album. Will Trent actually release a CD or will it be digital download only. |

If it's digital download only, I definitely won't be getting it.
I like having the case for the CD, the booklet with the artwork, and all that nifty stuff. With downloads, all you got is the music (which is nice, but I want something that it's recored on). I wouldn't buy movies for download either. I want a DVD or BluRay. Not just some immaterial data on my harddrive. |

Maybe its me, but I find so much wrong with this approach its not even funny, and what worse its late so I don't feel like going into it right now. I can kinda sum it up this way though, arrogance + anticipation does not equal sales, and that Reznor would think so means his thinking is just an antiquated as the industry he's screaming against.
Too bad too, because this Saul Williams appears to be quite the intellect. More on this when I have time/sleep. Promise. |

It seems Trent can be arrogant and stubborn at times. I support his views though, the music industry pumps out a lot of garbage to make a quick buck, and chokes any actual art out of the equation.
I don't agree with digital downloads, it's incomplete to me, hence why I don't use the iTunes store. That said I'd really like to hear what you have to say about the subject. |

Great, but that's not what this thread is about. At all. I'm sure you can find some nice P.C. censored albums at Walmart though.

Ummm. if youre looking for less offensive, the title is the last place you need to be worried about. The music isnt designed to be politically correct. Really most of trents music is designed to shine right through PC crap. Niggy tardust wasnt designed with PC in mind either. If the name would deter you, but the music in general wont, then you have some strange thought processes.
I personally find the concept of not listening to something, be it music, literature, anything, because its offensive, disheartening. Really, alot of the non problem-problem solving going on is due to that. Im not trying to be an ass, but really man, saying you wont listen to it over the name sort of goes against the point of the music. But you are, as a human, fully entitled to your oppinion. just understand be known that many, if not most, open minded intellectualy active people will disagree. Its dissapointing really. im all for digital downloads, with the option of a normal setup too. id rather not just have something digital, id rather have the cd art and pay more for it. but some people are against that i guess, which is fine. I'll play along, shit i paid for a copy in 320 cause i really like saul williams, but typically not something i do. thats typically a deal breaker for me

Have you heard Sauls music? I haven't heard it yet, I'm guess it's like "intelligent" hip hop/mood music type of stuff? I'd really like to hear what He's all about. |

I've debated the merits of this approach extensively at another forum, and here's a conclusion that Mr. Reznor wouldn't really like: His business model won't work unless you're Trent Reznor. They may not have spent any money marketing it, but there sure was a lot of press involved. Given the amount of free pub that was involved, I'd view this release as being the novelty. The treu test case will be the album that Saul Williams releases *after* this, when it's no longer a "new, bold" idea. I suspect that sales figures won't be so high.
Marketing is really the issue in this case, and this model isn't workable unless you've already got hooks into the existing press system.

That it a point I've thought about as well, Trent can do this, because of who he is. There is no way a guy like me, or a band like yours would be able to do the same. I feel that booking agencies, press agencies, and production agencies are still very necessary for rising musicians. The only evil entity are the record labels themselves, and the way "popular music" is pushed on musicians and listeners alike. |

I also think Trent might be realizing this as well, he doesn't seem to happy judging from that post.

there wasnt much press for NSD. you talking about year zero? that was presswide everywhere, cause trent is halfway to leading a cult
. totally right on that not working for most people. from the post though, i highly doubt that Sauls next album will be released online like that . i think it was effective at getting his name out, but not for sales, which sucks. I think hes sort of already come to that conclusion that you made lol. its really unfortunate

I still think that musicians can acheive success without a proper label. But you still need a lot of the industry people behind you helping you get there. |

i was talking to mike
![]() i didnt even notice any press at all about NTD. i just knew about it cause i had his first album, which my buddy (english teacher in highschool) showed me. Its definitely possible to do, but its hard. I mean, look at fugazi. it took em years, but iirc they were the first band to go platinum on an indie label. I have no issue with most of the recording industry. what i have a problem with, is the same thing you do, the way some music is pushed, and other shit is ignored, all in the name of money
