Any other classical composers around here?

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the Jazz, Acoustic, Classical & Fingerstyle forum or here, so mods, please feel free to move it at your discretion.

As the title implies, I was wondering if there are any other classical composers on the forum? Take the definition of "classical" as loosely as you'd like - lord knows I've had enough arguments about it already.

I've often found the writings of those who are grounded in metal or other rock idioms to be of more interest to me than those with purely classical background. Given that the majority here are extended range and, thus, inherently non-traditional players, I'd love to hear what some of you have come up with.

I'm a little reluctant to openly post my scores (due to certain copyright issues), but things can be exchanged via email if necessary.

No, but I'm a critic of some esteem.

I'd definitely fit your description. Most of the stuff I've written in the undergrad program at UBC is pretty abstract. Mostly chamber ensemble stuff. And a few of them have yet to be performed - I found the composing process to be so exhausting that I had no desire to arrange a performance afterwards.

I've got a bunch of scores, and recordings for a flute solo and a trio for classical guitar, bass flute and wine glasses.

The latest thing I've completed is a classical guitar solo. It's a real bugger to play and I'm still practicing it over a year later

I'd be happy to exchange scores & sound files with you if you're interested.

What stuff have you written?

I'm neither educated (musically speaking), nor talented enough to compose classical music. Thats why I play metal... too smart for punk, too dumb for classical...

...actually, I can't take credit for that quip either, I saw this one on a shirt at a ALMS sportscar race: "Too smart for NASCAR, too dumb for opera".

What stuff have you written?

I sort of took you as a given, Leo. I'd love to hear/see what you've put together. I'm surprised you found a bass flute player - it must have sounded awesome.

I'm definitely on the odd side of the spectrum. Virtually everything I do is atonal in one way or another - I'm not a hardened serialist by any standard, though; there's too many situations where an intuitive approach allows for far greater expression than simply following the next "logical" step. I work a lot with extended techniques - although I'm trying to make it through my current piece for solo piano without using them except at the climax. I'm trying to make sure that I can write without them, rather than using them as a sort of crutch.

I haven't really got much recent stuff that I can share - due to various problems that kept me from working (or at least working productively) over the summer and into the fall, my last completed piece is from last Spring. I'm rather proud of it, though - it's for tenor sax, bass clarinet, violin, piano and percussion. The really crowd pleasing parts are when things like triangles and finger cymbals are lowered into water. I got so many questions of "what the hell were those sounds?" after the show.

I'll send the score to that one to your email address listed on Facebook.

That's still something I'd like to do. I've found, though, that I can usually express myself better with small ensembles, rather than trying to divide an idea between all the orchestral groups.

On the other hand, the wealth of colours available from the orchestra is completely unparalleled. Mmmm, colours...

It's not as tough to get into as one may think. It's a very, very short step between writing your average prog song and certain forms of classical.

The trick is knowing notational practices - it's hard as hell to communicate your ideas to performers without them.

Yeah, I've written some stuff. I'm classically trained, so that helps. It's pretty funny how most of the music almost writes its self.

i've composed plenty of pieces.
some of my pieces were for my old high schools's jazz band (which i found odd, as they weren't really jazz songs as you would think of a jazz song), which they performed at a few competitions.

right now i'm working on a solo guitar arrangement of The Heart Asks Pleasure First by Michael Nyman.

this is ithe original. simply gorgeous...

I don't compose, but I like to transcribe / play classical etudes.

I first got interested from metal to classical via learning Yngwie songs. Then realized that I should go to "The Masters" for knowledge and inspiration instead of Yngwies version or interpretation of classical lines.

The composers I enjoy the most are; Niccolò Paganini, Frédéric Chopin, Henryk Wieniawski, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Franz Liszt, Nikolai Kapustin, Charles-Valentin Alkan, Johann Sebastian Bach, Sigismond Thalberg...et cetera.

Chopin's piano pieces are the absolute best... just amazing things.
