Why does this make me think of the scales I just taught "my" bassist.

Very good conversation going on in this thread.

second that!

Yeah, that's a universal issue, and yeah, not just with guitarists. It's just that there's more idiots who'll pick up a guitar (because it's flashy) than drums or bass, but it still crosses all barriers.

Sadly.

In a former band, we auditioned this guy, he was modest but confident, gave all sorts of influences and said all the right things... we were clear we intended to be a professional band, were going to really push ourselves out there, he said he was right there with us... gave him the demos we'd done that were just bass, drums, and acoustic guitar, he said no problem...

He showed up with a Kay guitar that looked liked one of Brian May's early rejects, a Fender head and cab that was beat to hell and about the size of a Rhodes electric piano. He turned everything to about 2 ("because going higher makes a lot of feedback") and proceeded to butcher everything we did.

He actually might have done alright in a Stones/Black Crowes cover band, but dear lord... I mostly couldn't hear him (I was the drummer), and when I could I wished I hadn't. It was sad.

And the next guy was a 21 year old death metal fan who had just started rehab for heroin addiction. Awesome guy, loved him to death, but not even close to the right fit for our band. He's actually doing well, last I heard.

Regarding the original subject... so he'd turned down going pro, huh? Someone needs to tell him that your mom offering to pay you not to play is not the same as 'going pro'!

Heh, I've been playing a little over a year now, and I'm the best guitar player I know! I'm not even that good. I've only been able to find one person who has a similar passion for music and he plays synth (we have been writing some badass stuff though!). I remember trying to play with this one dude at a lock-in at our school who had told me he was really good. I tried teaching him some X Japan riffs and he couldn't get them! Then we had a blues jam, I asked him what key it was going to be in so I could improvise and he didn't even know, so I had to find it out for him! Our rival school has a TON of good musicians, but I've never had a chance to meet any of them.

I hate anyone that they thinks they are anything. In my opinion, everyone is sufficient. Steve Vai is sufficient for the music he plays. Yngwie is sufficient.

I have yet to meet anyone who makes me rethink the instrument. I have to delve back into baroque periods to find something that makes me really go "wow, you can do that and get away with it".

Someone who can play power chords and knows his skill level > someone who can sweep and do the 8 finger+penis tapping and think they are the best player ever.

Don't worry man. Your not alone.
Me and my friend know this dude who says he's been playing for 8 years(basically bragging about how good he was). We went to one of his shows (he claims his music is death metal), but when he starts playing it's just hardcore generic bullshit.

I look at what he's playing before and after the show, and dude, for playing for 8 years he sure sucked a lot of balls. I've been playing for 3 years and I could sweep and do some 8 finger tapping and shit. Way more than what he was doing. He just over all, didn't look like a player of 8 years. He was so full of shit his eyes were brown.
So don't worry man. Your not the only one with those kinds of assholes.

I theorized about that and I said, "Maybe when he said he kept turning down going pro, it was some guys making fun of him by sarcastically saying, 'Hey, when are you gonna put out your solo album? You better release it or I'll never forgive you. We'll even play as your backup band.' And he thought they were serious." Or, of course, the more simple answer: he was just lying. The bass player said, "Maybe he couldn't send us any recordings because they don't exist... and probably because the actual songs don't exist." and I commented, "The song that he played that he said was from his previous band sounded like he was just randomly playing two powerchords with no real sense of rhythm or tempo. I bet he was never actually in any previous bands. What kind of person would want a 'guitarist' like that?"

Yeah, that pro thing is definitely not true.

Oh, she didn't happen. And neither did our bass player or the original drummer, bass player, and guitarist. For that matter, I never happened.

*Snap* "What are you doing?" "I need to prove that you 'happened.'" "What?" (first I have to figure out how to say that in Japanese, but seeing as I have no idea what "happened" means in such a context... )

when I was younger, I used to be the cockiest piece of shit because I started learning how to sweep (horribly sloppily) when I was 14. After a while, I realized that I definitely was NOT the shit, and had a lot of practicing to do to make up for all of the talk of times past..

seriously, I met this one guy in canada, when I was smoking bud with his friend...

cockiest ............ ever....
wouldnt tell me how to find his 'sick shredding video', and said he 'jammed with yngwie and he liked it'

I tried as nicely as I could to explain to him that I did not give a rat's ass about his marshall plexi and old scalloped fender, and that I didnt want a long explanation of how to get 'the perfect tone'

anyway, after this guy, I made a mental note to never again step in his direction if I could help it.

I doubt he was as good as he said anyway, I told him I would go jam with him if he had a guitar for me to use...

Our lead guitarist is pretty good example of this...Not to talk shit about him or anything but...He is pretty ....ing good at lead work...Excellent sweeps, knows his scales and music theory awesomely. But i show him rhythm stuff and many times he looks completely lost. I call it the Marty Friedman Syndrome because Marty Friedman had a similar problem with adapting to Rhythm Guitar.

Nah, our music isn't that tough. We don't have any good recordings of the music, but here's some stuff to give you an idea. The simple song I was referring to is the first song on our myspace.

Here's our myspace which just has 4 songs that me and the bass player recorded at his apartment in 1 day about a year ago: MySpace.com - Exsanguination - JP - Metal / Thrash / Death Metal - www.myspace.com/exsanguinationthrash

Here's a video of our live performance before the drummer and bass player quit (the guy on lead guitar is currently our band's bass player):
Hey Eric, I just listened to the first half of that. Not my sort of thing at ALL, but you guys are pretty damned good. I'm surprised (though I shouldn't be) and impressed. I guess you're always just so ....ing dour around these boards that I figured your band had to suck.

I don't know whether to say "thanks" or "Damn you, Drew! Damn you!!"

I guess my internet persona might come across as negative and dour (as oftentimes some people take my sarcastic joking as being serious on here), while my real life persona comes off as a sarcastic but friendly jokester. Whaddya gonna do? My band probably pushes away the grim and frostbitten serious black metalheads and the brutal crazy death metalheads because my MC talking at our shows is never serious and is sometimes a little over the top (in the nonsense era). Not your typical type of stuff for this kind of music.

I assume the song you're referring to is the one in the video and not the first one off our myspace. That's our heaviest song, so I wouldn't think it'd be the kind of stuff you'd usually listen to, but we have two songs that I think you'd probably like - more melody, more clean parts, some of my blues-esque lead work, more clean vocals.

Which leads me to curse at myself too, cause i should have practiced a lot more

Hell, I'm a shit guitarist, I've only been playing maybe 3 or 4 years. I can't solo, but i can riff, and I can listen, and I can tell when something is out of my league.

Over the last few years all I've realised is that other guitarists 90% of the time are douchebags.
