tool is the only band that I have always loved with a passion for the past ten years or so.

I cant think of anyone that sounds like them...

I seem to hear aspects of them in Dream Theater stuff, but thats a 'chicken or the egg' sort of thing as Im pretty sure they cross- influence. Or maybe thats just the use of polyrythms.

I think its important to ask 'what era of tool' a band should sound like. And for each era, then try to find the closest thing. But nobody is tool

I definitely agree with GP1's 'what era of tool' remark... in fact, I noticed in this thread definite division of fans: "I liked them from the beginning through Aenima" vs "I like them from Aenima/Lateralus on".

I fall into the former group, though I haven't really heard 10,000 Days. I wanted to like Lateralus, but there is way to much "hey, here's a good song, and here's a good song, I know, let's put them together and they'll be twice as good!" May work for peanut butter and chocolate, but not for songs. :P

I like the first APC album, too, but not the second. Honestly, I only really like about half of the first APC, it gets a bit too ambient for me, but that's just my personal preference. The second lacked any fire at all, and seemed really derivative. Just my opinion, though.

Chevelle has a huge Tool influence, though they're not nearly as good or innovative. Other than that... can't think of anyone that puts me in mind of Maynard and the Boys, beside cheap and obvious imitators.

Hmm... I think I'll get all self-righteous and listen to 'Hooker With A Penis' again

If you develop an ear for sounds that are musical it is like developing an ego. You begin to refuse sounds that are not musical and that way cut yourself off from a good deal of experience. ~ John Cage
