i hold Tool in a pretty high regard. I'm not really into them, but i have a lot of respect for a group that can breed such an intense cult following. Especially because i don't get it.. Like i can't easily pin down what it is that people are obsessed with.. It's cool
But honestly, other than Schism, i find Lateralus really boring - the intro to Ticks and Leeches is cool but that's pretty much the highlight of it for me. 10,000 Days is solid as an album, but i don't find myself actually WANTING to listen to it.

Never listened to a Perfect Circle. From what i remember, aren't they a slightly more pop-friendly incarnation of Tool? Like simpler song structures and more melodies? What album should i look into?

Mer de Noms and Thirteenth Step. As far as eMOTIVe goes, you're better off pretending it doesn't exist.

Be the change you want to see in the world.

tool was kinda special when they popped up, and after some exploration lateralus came out and it was sortof "the" tool album, it was good. 10,000 days has a few good songs, but i've kinda lost respect for them after the hype following lateralus.

a perfect circle was a fresh more pop-ish kind of tool, some good songs of their 2 real full length albums, but also really good lyrics. nowadays i dont know but i dont care much for any of them.

as for good bands that sound similar, i kinda think Porcupine Tree has some APC/Tool vibes to them here and there.

Necky379 has a spectacular aura about
have you listened to anything from tool off 'salival"? it's a rare live disk but you can download the songs obviously. they cover zepplin's "no quarter" and do a song called "you lied" which is one of my favorite tool songs, maynards voice sounds like an entire choir at one point. btw check out Clutch if you haven't already, to me they sound like tool but with a southern rock thing going on...real different listen to their cd "blast tyrant" and their self titled one, good stuff. saw them live the other day.

It's not a "rare live disk", but an official release.

And No Quarter absolutely slays.

I never really got into Tool that hard until the phenomenal Laturallus album. I still bought their music back in the day, but the recent stuff is much more involving and dynamic. A Perfect Circle's stuff is great as well, Thirteenth Step being the standout album there... and that being said, I was aurally perusing the Myspace page for Maynard's latest dysfunctional project Pusifier and enjoying the samples very, very much. Me thinks me will buy.

I dunno... I've TRIED to like Tool. I've listened to a lot of their stuff, but it always just comes off as the same riff that is cut and pasted for 7 minutes long to make a song. Come up with new riff, cut and paste it for 7 minutes, and another song.

Their stuff just kinda drags on too much for me, with little to no real variation in one tune. I know the freakin' pieces fit, but you don't have to tell me 30,000 times in one song.

Any suggestions as to their less repetitive stuff that I should give a listen?

Uhh... I dunno, that's kinda their style, slowly evolving rhythms broken up by breaks with improvisational qualities. I like bands of this nature, you likely don't.

I thought The Thirteenth Step was one of the most disappointing second albums I have ever heard... I was so disappointed I went right off them until I heard "Passive" cause it was linked to the Constantine movie.

I can totally relate to Hal's comments as around '92 Tool were built up with MASSIVE hyperbole as this perfect metal band... and when I got around to hearing them (Undertow and "Sober" were my introductions in late 92) I thought they were good but probably not in my top ten... disappointed again, but I don't think any band could have lived up to that hype

Undertow and Aenima were very good but after that I REALLY lost interest in Tool much the same way as APC, I just thought the effort going into the epic-ness of some of the songs was outweighing the actual songs themselves.

BTW APC performing Three Libras on Leno (find it on Youtube) is still the only televised live performance that has sent a chill up my spine. So far, no other televised live thingy from ANY band has been able to match it for shear pathos IMHO.

I really liked older Tool, but quite frankly they've been progressively going downhill since Aenima. I listened to the latest album through headphones and quite frankly it was putting me to sleep so I never picked it up

Never really listened to A Perfect Circle.
