The 'Hour of Music That Rocks My World' thread...

This forum needs a few more time-waster threads, so inspired by those cheesy articles in Guitar World, put together an hour long playlist, and write a little bit about each track.

I'll go first...

Paradise Lost: Accept the Pain
There are loads of PL songs that could make the list, but this is my current favourite. Their last two albums have been a major return to form.

My Dying Bride: Catherine Blake
This is one of Aaron's best lyrical/vocal performances, and features some really dramatic, powerful riffery.

Biomechanical: The Awakening
There's some interesting film-score type flourishes amidst all the heavy riffery here, and John K has a pretty distinctive voice.

Nightwish: Amaranth
I almost feel guilty about liking this so much, but it's a really catchy song. Plus it's kinda cute having someone as girly as Annette fronting a metal band, even if it's sugar-coated gothic metal (see the video for evidence).

Dream Theater: Forsaken
Even if the last album has had something of a mixed reception, there're still moments of pure awesomeness on it. This one's really grown on me since the first listen.

The Axis of Perdition: A Ruined Nation Awakes
For some reason this makes me feel a lot better about work.

Arcturus: Kinetic
I love the theatrical, side-show aspect of the band, and the slightly deranged nature of the lyrics. It reminds me a lot of early Genesis, only reflected in one of those distorted mirrors you get in fairgrounds.

Keep of Kallessin: Armada
This is easily one of the best new black metal albums, and manages to be melodic without lapsing into tired Dimmu/CoF worship.

Symphony X: Set the World on Fire
Best track off a near-flawless album.

Fields of the Nephilim: In the Year 2525
This is a surprisingly effective cover, and the lyrics suit the band's own output perfectly.

Nevermore: Born
Do I really need to explain this one?

Tori Amos: China
Even Tori fans seem to ignore this one, which is a shame...

Aeon: Living Sin
Death metal perfection...first 'old school' death metal band I've enjoyed in a while.

'If one octave isn't interesting then who the hell cares about the others?!' Diamanda Galas

This is an awesome idea, dude.

Venetian Snares - "Shoot Myself"

I love the mix of sporadic breakbeat style drums and the mixture of orchestral instruments that swell in and out of the piece alongside a church organ that is present throughout.

White Zombie - "Black Sunshine"

There's a lot of weird sound made by use of the whammy bar that I love in this song. "Wuh-wuh-w-w-w-wuh-wuh-wuh-wuh"...kind of thing.

Styx - "Come Sail Away"

When the song really gets going its so awesome

Skid Row - "The Threat"

My favourite Skid Row song of all time, it has an amazing main riff and a solo thats just top titty.

Porcupine Tree - "Open Car"

One of the best songs off their "Deadwing" album, and chorus always gives me goosebumps.

The Misfits - "Helena"

I love a lot of Misfits stuff because of their lyrics being based around Horror movies, which I'm also a big fan of, this song is no different. It's just my favourite because theres a lot of happy memories attached to it.

Marty Friedman - "Fuel Injection Stingray"

I like the funny 'bubbly' noises in the intro

Dire Straits - "Money For Nothing"

Lyrics that are an awesome take on the music industry, and a guitar riff thats like a chainsaw cutting through glass.

Division - "Hunt"

I don't think there's one thing I don't like about this song, its just fucking wicked.

David Bowie - "Ziggy Stardust"

Duh-duh-du-de-du-de-duh-duh! Awesome guitar part and brilliant lyrics

Aphex Twin - "Come To Daddy"

It's a great electronica song, Richard D. James is really a genre all by himself...this song is like listening to white noise with subliminal messaging thats not all together too subliminal

Iron Maid - "The Trooper"

From the twiddly intro to the galloping of the verse, this song is none-stop awesomeness.

Killswitch Engage - "Holy Diver"

One of the best covers I've EVER heard. And of an awesome song as well.

Well, thats all of them. I think I'd rearrange the order though because it might seem a bit perculiar at the moment

More words here is more words.

Cigarettes 5:51 King's X
- Just love the riff in this song, even if it is subliminally making me want to smoke hahahahah!

The Abyss 3:57 Hypocrisy
- This song was an obsession. Took me ages to find a compilation with it on. Then the bastards rerecorded it a few years later. Original still has the best atmosphear though!

He-Man Woman Hater 6:19 Extreme

- Strange, but this is my favorite song of PEM, which is my favorite album, just love the orchestration and movement

Zero Tolerance 4:49 Death

- Well, wouldn't you? Love this track. It's a toss up between this and rooster, but i love this one more

D.N.R. (Do Not Resuscitate) 3:33 Testament
- THe gathering is an awesome album. THis track just hits in like a sledgehammer with style Plus James Murphy's tone is godlike.

Neal has a spectacular aura about
Blackened - by you know who
-First real metal song I ever heard as a kid. Still rules.

Walk All Over You - AC/DC
-The riff, the tone, the dynamics.

Human Prey/Corporation Pull-In - Terrorizer
-Best grind album ever. Sandoval rules.

Pain Devine - Morbid Angel
-Best death metal album. EVER. Again, Sandoval rules.

Stabwound - Necrophagist
-Never liked sweep picking so much

Behold Judas - Hate Eternal
-Ferocious energy, on record and on stage. Top notch shit.

I'm The One - Van Halen
-Just flat-out kick-ass rock and roll.

Mediterranean Sundance/Rio Ancho - The Guitar Trio
-This shit really blows my mind.

Lasting Dose - Crowbar
-Best 'ringer' song of all time. Most of you won't know what I mean.

Temptation - Slayer
-Not even really my favorite Slayer tune, but it's got the Slayer breakdown to end all Slayer breakdowns.

Dead Embrionic Cells - Sepultura
-Personal favorite thrash album and one of the first metal songs I learned to play.

Highway Star - Deep Purple
-I want to learn the keyboard solo. This has to be the only song I've ever said that about.

TemjinStrife is a jewel in the rough
Brother Moon - Amorphis
-Incredible melodic, lilting riff and driving verse, while staying catchy as hell.

Out On The Streets - Bang Camaro
-Pseudo-80s major-key metal chock-full of fist-pumping riffs and a wall of singers.

Apocalypse Please - Muse
-Cavernous, thundering piano and swirling, layered percussion create a driving, on-the-edge feel.

A Master's In Reverse Psychology - Murder By Death
-Dynamic and heavy in its own way, contrasting staccato dirty guitar with excellent cello playing.

This Isn't What We Meant - Savatage
-Show-music metal at it's finest. Incredible singing and a thunderous rhythm section intertwine with searing solos.

Big Sky - The Reverend Horton Heat
-A quick instrumental showcasing the Reverend's rough-around-the-edges swagger and balls-out style. Far trickier than it sounds!

Fade To Black - Metallica
-Amazing dynamics, from the quiet and lyrical intro solo and acoustic verses to the crushing chorus and ending. Incredible stuff.

Dimension - Wolfmother
-Crushing, epic, and incredibly heavy stoner rock.

Thunderhorse - Dethklok
-The ultimate metal guitar showcase: sweeping, tremolo picking, tapping, neoclassicism, galloping; all the cliches within two and a half minutes, without getting boring, widdly, or repetitive.

Outside - Tribe
-Clean, chiming delay creates a soundscape for some great classic-sounding vocals and a great climax.

Till the Break of Dawn - Chrome Division
-Awesome rough Motorhead/early Priest-style metal, starting with an odd riff that sounds out of place until the whole band joins in a few seconds later and pounds the hell out of it.

The Last Crusade - A New Age Dawns #1 - Epica
-Symphonic metal at its finest. Crushing drop-tuned rhythms pound below choir, orchestra, and Simone Simon's stunning voice.

Shooter has a spectacular aura about
Frank Zappa- Peaches en Regalia
Great instrumental with some incredible writing... Zappa rules.

Led Zeppelin- Kashmir
This has got to be one of the songs that started metal. Dark and heavy.

Korn- Here to Stay
Yup, I like Korn. SUPER heavy, and it's the song that basically got me into guitar.

Metallica- One
Maybe sorta cliche, but I love it. I think it has the first guitar solos I actually sat and learned entirely... all three of them.

Steve Vai- Building the Church
I just think this song is really REALLY cool. It's a great guitar instrumental song without just sounding like a bunch of noodling.

System of a Down- Deer Dance
VERY heavy, but also showcases that nutty skitsophrenic sorta thing SOAD is so good at.

Mastodon- Iron Tusk
Love this song... and they tune down to A on a SIX string!

Slayer- Bloodline
I'm just getting into Slayer, and I found this song on Youtube and really liked it (any other Slayer recommendations would be appreciated).

Shuggie Otis- Strawberry Letter 23
Many people know this song by The Brothers Johnson, but Shuggie Otis was the guy that did it originally. He's a great songwriter that not enough people know about.

Serj Tankian- Lie Lie Lie
This song is just weird, which I like. If you haven't heard Serj Tankian's solo record, you should check it out.

Digital Underground- Same Song
This is rap when it was good... fun, and none of that "look at my chain" crap. This song also has 2-pac in it.

Jimi Hendrix- Little Wing
This one might be a little chliche too, but I just think it's beautiful, and it leaves you thinking "How the hell did he come up with that shit?"

There's so many great songs by so many great bands, how do you just pick an hour's worth?

If you're out there and you're cute, maybe you're beautiful, I just wanna tell you something... there's more of us ugly m*ther f*ckers then you are.
-Frank Zappa

Hows this?

Wild Side- Motley Crue
I'm reading a couple books on Motley Crue and this song just seems too awesome to me right now
Losin' Your mind- Pride and Glory
Zakk Wylde rocks
Ice Cream Man- Van Halen
I love the bluesy intro and this song took on a whole new meaning to me after seeng DLR do an intro story about it last November when they came
Technical Difficulties- Racer X
Still trying to learn all the crazy licks in the solo. Started in September
Sad but True- Metallica
Supreme metal riff.
Hysteria- Muse
One of my favourite Muse songs. It's got an awesome chorus
Superbeast- Rob Zombie
"Hell ya! I'm the one that you wanted! Hell ya! I'm a superbeast!!"
Dragon Mistress- Marty Friedman
What happened to you Marty? You used to be so metal..
Go Off!- Cacophony
If I could play this I would be my own God.
Not going Away- Ozzy Osbourne
My favourite song off his new album. vocal line in the verse. It was great to see him play this live in September. Could have used just a few more pinch harmonics and it would have been ultimate.

Salvia
