Saw Himsa/Amon Amarth last night, and a slight picstory followed

Well, a couple weeks ago I picked up tickets for to see Himsa, Sonic Syndicate, and Amon Amarth in Orangevale, CA. Last night was the night.

First, the people. The people attending were me, my mom (she actually likes the music, go figure, haha), and our friend from work, Adam.

Me

The Club

Well, first, three local acts opened up the show. I didn't get any shots of them, but here's the basic rundown. Links provided if anyone gets bored and wants to listen to some new stuff.

First band was called Nephilim. They had a pretty bad ass sound and extremely solid playing. The guitarist was using a Gibson Flying V into a Peavey 5150. Sadly, their guitarist busted a string during their first song, and he had no backup. So, by the time he found a gutitar he could use and got it tuned, they only got to play one more song. Having no backup was a pretty amateur mistake I bet he won't make again.

Second band was called Fate. Honestly, I got pretty bored with these guys. They seemed like solid players and everything, but it just seemed like tremolo picking or sweep picking tossed in every now and then amongst breakdowns. Not my cup of tea at all.

Third band was Conducting From The Grave. They seemed pretty damn good. Technique, song writing, tone, all was pretty solid. The vocals weren't exactly my thing, but I could past it. They put on a really good show and had some nice gear (dual recto and framus cobra). Damn, the Cobra was the driest sounding amp I've ever heard. I was right up front, and even had my throat grabbed by the vocalist mid song. They put on a really good show over all.

Then I was expecting Sonic Syndicate to come on. I look over at the list of bands for the night ... and they weren't on it. I guess they weren't playing this show for some reason. Really bummed me out because I really wanted to see them.

Then came HIMSA. Wow, these guys put on an excellent show. I've listened to a bit of their recorded stuff before, but never thought too much of it. But after the show, I definitely plan on listening to them some more. Plus, there were these kids in the crowd, maybe 10 years old, and half way through Himsa's set, the vocalist pulled the kids up on stage to rock out with 'em. It was pretty cool. They seemed like pretty decent guys. I was right up front on the right side, so most of my shots are of one guitarist, but here are the shots I took of them.

Then came AMON AMARTH. My second time seeing these guys. Damn, what a show. Only thing is as soon as they came on the crowd started going crazy, so I only stayed up front for the first three songs. The sound was so loud, that it sounded a lot better towards the back anyway. It was cool, that towards the middle of their set they mentioned Decapitated, which lead the crowd into chanting "Vitek", and then they played "Fate of Norns" and dedicated it to him. Great show, and the playing was executed perfectly. they played a full hour and a half set. My only complaint is that Johan's vocals sounded pretty bad. They didn't have the deep growl that I love of him, but more of a high raspy thing, like he messed up his throat recently or something. Oh well, still a great show. I didn't get many shots of them because of the crowd, but there's one of the setlist, their beverages, and then a few more.

Overall, it was a great show and a really fun time. I just wish Sonic Syndicate would have played. Oh well, a good night it was.

There's a hole in the world like a great black pit
And it's filled with people who are filled with shit
And the vermin of the world inhabit it
But not for long ...

Both guys were using Krankensteins. Didn't sound great, but not horrible.
