One of my favourite guitarists atm. Every guitarist could do with taking a look at him. He has great technique, but that isn't the most impressive thing; it's his phrasing. So tasteful.

He's arguably the most versatile and skilled guitar player in the world.

is there any style or mechanical movement this guy "can't" do?
he sweeps , he taps, he's got great legato, his alternate picking is unbelievable. the total package.

He's also got a great instructional book for cheap. It's called Creative Guitar (or something very similar).

Although no-one will ever be like Shawn. Then again, I doubt anyone will ever be as good as Guthrie at what he does.

Man, that guy is just unmatched. Talk about versatile.
Plus, he's got all those chops, but he actually makes music. Him > all shred wankers.

His playing is great, he reminds me somewhat of John Petrucci in that he can flow seamlessly from one technique to another - all the tapping is musically integrated, for example. From what I've heard on YouTube & MySpace though, he still hasn't quite found a band or context though. Playing great licks over 70's jazz/fusion tracks isn't going to break him out of a narrow audience - I'd like to hear him with the G3 crowd, or in a little more violent tech/metal context. I already have 70's jazz/fusion records.
He's friends with Ron Thal, hmmm.... |

Great player. His album is a brilliant piece of work, although I agree it would be cool to hear more of him in the context of a full band.

He's a freakin' awesome dude. I had the unexpected pleasure of meeting and greeting the guy last year. He gave me great advice about note choice and things of that nature.
I want his babies. |

i'm totally with stubhead here, this guy is really talented obviously, but content wise, i was bored watching that, i too think if he found a band to play with and applyed his skills to that sort of writing he would be killer. Honostly there are tons and tons of players with killer amazing technique so thats not too impressive, i'm more impressed with guys that can play AND write killer songs, reguardless, this guy whales!

Check out his album 'Erotic Cakes'...that is done with his band, and that is his style (jazz fusion mainly), absolutely killer album, really shows his diversity and ability to rip the fretboard apart, along with being able to write brilliant tunes.
Also, he was in Asia for quite a while, for another idea of how he works in a band. The vids on youtube are just jams really, check out his recorded music for an idea of what he's really about. |
