Questions for Mike Keneally? Post them here!
The almighty adminishredder gave me the go-ahead to approach Mike for an interview, and he agreed, so here's your chance to throw in any questions you might have, and in a week or so I'll send them all off with a few of my own and we'll see what happens
For those not familiar with Mike Keneally, he got his big break replacing Steve Vai as the "stunt guitarist" in Frank Zappa's band, playing both guitar and keyboards. He's gone on to play guitar/keys in Vai's band, guitar in Dweezil Zappa's band, all while maintaining a solo career. Most recently (and most importantly to most of the people here, haha) he's the touring guitarist for the Dethklok band. He also wields a Guitarp, which is a cross between a seven-string guitar with a high A string and an electric sitar, so he's more than qualified to join the super-kvlt-underground-no-sixers-allowed club, heh. Post away! |

I'd like a full rundown of the rig he uses to amplify and process that guitarp.

Do you write out your music in standard notation when you're composing, or is it all intuitive?
How did you end up working with Frank Zappa? Do you consider yourself a composer who plays guitar, or a guitarist who writes music? How does being a vocalist influence your guitar playing? Do you tend to start with lyrics or music? I love Mike Keneally, especially the HAT album, so this should rule. Well done for getting this organised!

What was it like working with a genuis like Frank Zappa? What were the live shows like? What was your favorite Zappa song to play live? Any cool Zappa stories?

Are you sick of hearing questions all about Frank Zappa all the time?
Seriously guys, Frank was a genius, but he's been dead for almost 15 years. How did you get your start in music? What has served as your inspiration over the years?

Since you play guitar and keyboards, do you find that one instrument inspires your playing on the other, and if so, how?

Well, obviously
I went and saw Zappa Plays Zappa last week and it was fantastic. But personally I would find it painful if I played for someone, then they have been gone forever, and people are still asking me questions about it... like Dino always getting asked questions about fear factory, and it is painfully obvious in his interviews that he hates those questions.

^^I'll ask him about the whole Zappa experience, but I'll try not to dwell on it. Personally, I could talk about Zappa all day and I never even met the guy, let alone played in his band, haha.
Also, for those unfamiliar with his music, there's a 24-hour stream of pretty much everything he's ever recorded here, chekkit

I'm going a different route...
How did you get involved with the Dethklok tour, and do you think you'll be doing more with Brendon Small (Tour-wise or with the cartoon)?

You did an excellent job on performing on Vai's Piano Reductions. How did that experience influence your piano / keyboard playing? And, did that project inspire you to want to write a piano-based instrumental album in the future? Finally, what are some of your current, on-going projects at hands?

For those who care, I've received the answers to half the questions, and expect the other half within a fortnight or so. I think you'll enjoy reading what Mike has to say
