Neat! Ayreon seriously rocks.

It's beyond me... How can one man make anything that coherent. It's absolutrly amazing how everything just fits!

I mean Anneke van Giersbergen's vocals on the title track are a thing of sheer and stunning beauty, and then there's so much more!

Give it a spin guys, well worth the money!

Trust your ears.

In life and music, what is is but that doesn't always mean it's what it should. Change, is in our hands.

atimoc has a spectacular aura about
The first time I listened 01011001 through I was like "That was it?" since there weren't many parts that stood out. However, like with pretty much all Ayreon albums, it took a few listens to get into it. I spent most of yesterday listening to the album and I think the only weak link on the album is Web of Lies, everything else is standard Arjen quality, i.e. bloody amazing.

If I had to compare it to other Ayreon albums, 01011001 would probably be the closest to Universal Migrator. Certain parts of the album are heavy as fuck on the Ayreon scale, and the soundscapes are quite "spacey" with all the analog synths and ambient sounds. I think I need to read the lyrics properly while listening to the CD, but at the moment it doesn't feel like such a tightly knit concept album as The Human Equation or Into the Electric Castle were, but that's alright.

The documentary on the bonus DVD was quite interesting, maybe not as good the one that came with The Human Equation though. Every singer told about their part in the recording process and how it all went, but there wasn't that much studio talk or random chit-chat. Well, Arjen and Hansi Kürsch did discuss Star Trek, and Simone Simons told a buttsecks joke

Random stuff that stood out:
-The industrial feel in the opening track
-The main riff in Unnatural Selection
-Joost van der Boek's piano section in The Sixth Extinction
-Steve Lee! That dude can sing, I had never heard Gotthard before
-Jorn Lande / Floor Jansen duet in Beneath the Waves

It's only February, but Opeth or someone else has to come up with something pretty damn impressive to make 01011001 not be my album of the year.

"These songs are long and there are fast parts, so that automatically means that they're good!"
