The black metal influence was a lot more obvious on their first album, although you're right, they seem to be moving further and further away from it...

Nothing like a good depressant to chase the blues away!

Most of the bands labelled black metal these days don't have much if anything to do with it at all; some are good, some aren't, but if I want black metal I look elsewhere.
It's true that a lot of 'black metal' these days would probably be better described as gothic or symphonic metal, but there're still a core of bands whose sound is rooted in the original Norwegian aesthetic but are adding more colourful elements to the sound.

Oh, I forgot Abgott...those guys are great.

I'm the same way. Unfortunately good production usually means it's not "tr00" black metal. I don't care about labels, Dimmu Borgir is probably my 2nd favorite band in the universe right now. They get better and better. I love Emperor and old CoF as well.

I'd love to discover some other black metal bands, as I love the epicness and sinister heaviness of the genre, but I require good production.

charles22880 can only hope to improve
in my personall opinoin bands like dimmu borgir, behemoth and cradle of filth has lost their core sound and have developed into something entirely different

i cant stand it when people bitch about production on black metal, what most people do not get is black metal is about creating a atmosphere no matter how good or bad the production may be.

hands down 1349 is one top notch act, one of the better bands to come out in the last 6 years every note live is perfect.

lately it has been these following bands
Mayhem
Gorgoroth
Kawir
Arckanum
Sear Bliss
Tormentor

along with the mix of neo-folk,edith piaf and classical

i saw them with enslaved zyklon and insomnium.

they were on 2nd after insomnium and before zyklon.

They were terrible beyond description. Marshall amps sound especially bad when you scoop the shit out them then drop some of the bass as well but that seems to be what 1349 are all about tone wise. It was 10 mins of static followed by me deciding that my friends second hand smoke in the smoking area outside was better than 1349s 'noise' inside.

then zyklon came on and slayed

Oh, for more modern, melodic black metal, Chthonic are supreme...

Yeah they were pretty pants on that tour IMO.
Although I saw them a while before that, supporting Gorgoroth, when they still had Frost and that guitarist, they were fucking awesome then!
