No, it ain't rocket science. That's why I can remember about 30 of their songs. They're easy to figure out; easy to play; and they're dang good songs.... and cool. dang cool
I can play some pretty complicated stuff, but I have trouble singing while playing. I can sing and play any Nirvana song, which is something that I like. |

Man, ANYONE can sing and play a Nirvanna song. It's not like the guy had any appreciable technical ability. And I don't care what anyone says, I thought his songwriting and lyrics sucked. Hard. Nirvanna is what happens when junior's first garage band accidently gets signed.

In defense of nirvana, there's something deeper there than simple songs and depressed lyrics. You truly have to appreciate the "mood" that the music creates, I think that Kurt was an amazing songwriter because no matter how you listen to any nirvana song the lyrics and the song are perfect reflections of each other. It's not like you're left wanting him to scream less here or use less distortion there, since it is all explained in the build ups and perfectly framed with the other elements of the song. You also gotta give credit to dave and chris for adding what they saw fit into the overall presentation.

I think people try to find something in Nirvana's music for the same reason people try to find a deeper meaning in extremely simplistic and often stupid paintings.

I think I may cover a Nirvana song and used sweep-picked arpeggios in place of all the bar chords.

I used to do covers of Nirvana's "Scentless Apprentice", "Milk It", and "Rape Me." Dang good songs. Noodles doesn't like Nirvana. So, what? I'm not gonna try to convince him to like Nirvana. Technical does not necessarily equal good and not technical does not necessarily equal bad. I like Nirvana's music and lyrics. Even if Kurt Cobaine had Steve Vai's skill, I don't think the people who dislike him now would like him then. There are quite a few very very technical bands I don't like at all and a lot of very simple bands I love. I used to play with a guitarist who had AMAZING technical skill and could shred pretty dang good, but I thought that Kurt Cobain wrote songs 10x better than he could. It's all opinionated. There is no definite answer to this, so arguing is futile. Drew and I like Nirvana and many other people don't. So what? I'm not gonna argue and say that Kurt was skilled at guitar, because I know he wasn't. But I enjoy their music very much. To me, rock is not about how well you can play (although that can help). Hatebreeder said in another thread that he won't listen to people who "can't play." Under his definition of people who can't play, I'd have to get rid of half of my albums. I listen to stuff that sounds good to me, stuff that I think rocks.

I did say that. I also dont listen to quite a few people who CAN Play.. (As much as i respect allan holdsworth for his ability i no doubt couldnt stomach one of his CDs. His tone is great, his technique is great..but.. the songs are weak, lol.) But at the same time, i dont want to buy cds with people stumbling over their instruments and whatnot.
