My First GIG (Well Jam Session)

Well I answered an ad in the local music scene here, a drummer and a bass player and they were looking for a guitarist, for experimental stuff. They listed their influences, stated it was mostly originals and for fun and I thought, great no covers.
So I showed up representing of course with my SEVEN STRING (JP7), got the usual,
"Oh is that a seven string, I never knew..."
So it started off just me and the drummer...man o man did we jam, and it was all prog/fusion stuff. I must say this drummer is AMAZING (way, way out of my league). Any rythm change I would throw at him, he'd quickly pick up on, exploit it and move on...it was fuck'n GREAT. Then the bass player showed up, and I got nervous. (I thought I could easily get away with key errors with a drummer, but keeping time and on key with the bass player also is another story).
Well within in a few short minutes we hit a groove that translated into a 2 hour jam, and we only stopped the song maybe twice...now that was AWESOME.
I told the boyz that even if I don't get the part, what we just did will fill my stocking for a lifetime. They seemed very pleased. We then went upstairs, and listened to some of their stuff they recorded with their old band ...wow. Pure Prog Rock...
Anyhoo, we have another jam scheduled for this coming Friday. I know for most of you this is just a drop of a hat, but for me, not jamming in over 20 years, this is HEAVEN on EARTH.
The only thing I regret is not recording it, I wanted to bring my portable multi-track...dang I'm an idiot.

Anyhoo we listened to some prog/jazz/fusion, bands like Tribal Tech...and even dabbled with a band called DEATH...now I think the direction these guys want to head is clearly marked by such bands like Tribal Tech, Anlagard and others...man I've got MUCHO homework to do

"and we'll also be establishing, beyond all scientific doubt, that ANY note can be made to sound good over ANY chord, so long as you put it in the right place!" Guthrie Govan

Wayne, that's why we all play what we do. Playing music in a group is one of the best experiences life has to offer

Props to you for getting back on the horse after all those years, and I hope you got the gig! If not, look at it as a great experience and a springboard for other opportunities.

Great advice bro, thanks. As I stated earlier, if they decide that I'm not the one, I still come out smelling pretty, I've experienced something that has given me hope, plus I am inspired to not only play better, but learn the guitar proper, starting with theory.

I got a guitar in '92, and basically formed a band by 96-ish. And we just played covers for fun until about 2 years ago. And I'll tell ya, I was content with just jamming with those guys all the time... but the second I got up on stage... the jamming didn't compare to the fun of that!

Just wait til you get on stage dude! You'll cream your pants (again!)

I agree with Regor. My band is fun to play with in rehearsal, but shows are a totally different experience. Tons of energy, and you're on the spot. You've got tons of people watching you and you have to keep their attention.
