Funny-yet-fucked-up-yet-kind-of-sad story - a couple of my high school buddies played in a pretty sucessful local ska/hardcore band - The Detriments, if any of you are up on the small-time punk/ska scene - today, they're playing hardcore under the name The Damaged. Anyway, in high school they booked this gig with this self-described "pirate hardcore" band. For the month running up to the show, I can't count the number of pirate hardcore jokes that were made, but it was pretty damned funny.

So, day of the show, the singer gets a voicemail. It's like the guitarist from the pirate hardcore band, I think, and he's just sobbing on the phone. He tearfully explains who he is, and that they have to cancel the gig because their singer died the night before.

It was just the most fucked up, surreal things.

It was kind of funny, though, in a way. The guys saved the voicemail, and were going to use it as a bonus track on their next album, but at the last minute decided it'd be kind of inappropriate.

But, they only just missed having a pirate hardcore band, whatever the fuck that means, open for them because the singer died the night before the show. A pirate's life for me, indeed!
