Thumbs up Rush - "Counterparts" Appreciation Thread

I absolutely love this album. I can remember spending hours listening to it on loop during my first year of University. I think it single-handedly made my course (and the assignments) more tolerable.

Alex Lifeson's solos on this album are phenomenal.

"Leave that thing alone" and "Cold Fire" are two of my favourite songs off this consistantly awesome album

I still say that "Animate" is one of the only "adult" (as in the mature variety, not the porn variety ) love songs I've ever heard.

Brilliant, underrated Rush disc. Their best overall disc since the immortal "Moving Pictures", IMO.

Division - American metal that doesn't suck. Much. Even on MySpace, and Soundclick, too.

Nobody's Hero led to some wisecracks, but I love every song on that album.

Great album. They were getting too synth-heavy on their past few albums. So when "Stick It Out" got released as their first single. A lot of people were saying "WOW! The old Rush is back! Heavy guitars again. No more cheesy synths!!!".

But of course at the same time. You had their fans from the 80's saying. "WTF?? Rush sold out! They went Grunge!!"

"...you can't be pure."

I'd say that the album is about 2/3 brilliant and 1/3 forgettable. Which is certainly a better ratio than "Roll The Bones". It was a much-needed return to form for Lifeson. I actually prefer "Test for Echo", though.

When this CD first came out I wasn't sure what to think. It definitely had some early 90's grunge influence at points which didn't sit well with me, but it also had Alex return to a heavier guitar tone.
Although, I think I agree with Jacksonplayer, some of it's good, but I'll take Test For Echo over this one. In fact, I would say Test For Echo is probably the last good Rush album.

maskofduality is on a distinguished road
it was the tracks off of this album that made me get into Rush in the first place. For the moment, they're my favorite 'matured' band.
