Dream Theater Comes to New York

I just came home from the Dream Theater show at Jones Beach in Long Island. Their performance were nothing short of amazing.

1. Constant Motion
2. Strange Deja Vu
3. Take The Time
4. Blind Faith
5. Surrounded 2007
6. Dark Eternal Night
7. Keyboard Solo
8. Lines In the Sand ( Vince)
9. In the Presence of Enemies

Encore:

A combination or medley of Trial of Tears, Finally Free, Learning to Live, In the Name of God, and Octavarium

They were just great. Much like Octavarium, I can appreciate Systematic Chaos alot more, now that I've seen most of the songs live. The crowd was really into the music. When DT comes to NY, it feels like you're a member of a gigantic family. It's like a completely different atmosphere because you can feel that they're coming home and almost want to impress you. I know it sounds cheesy, but it's almost like an emotional experience. The highlight of my night was either Strange Deja Vu or Take the Time, although I loved Dark Eternal Night without the vocal distortion.

Random Thoughts:

JP played better than he did at the Radio City Show, sporting his new EBFR F-1 7 with a tobacco burst quilt top. He completely nailed the unison at the end of Blind Faith, which he has had trouble with in the past. I guess it's fair to say he's on the top of his game right now. His tone was great. I'm almost sure he used both the RK and MKIV I can honestly say that for the first time, JR was not completely annoying during his solo and keytar bits. His volume was lowered considerably because the last time they played Jones Beach, his volume was WAY to high and it was ear piercing, even in the mezzanine. MP always delivers. I love John Myung's new EB bass. It looks sick under the lights. James Labrie was the man of the hour. (well, 2 hours )
He's very comfortable with the new material. His overall performance was great. MP concluded the show with his cliche, "There's no place like home", speech while they took a bow. I've seen Dream Theater many times. This show was up there as one of the best.

I ran to to the mixer to get a setlist and was stopped by a security guard who was about to yell at me. I told him that I was just going to go ask for a setlist and he instantly became nice and told me he was sorry that the set list had already been taken. . I'll get one next time, I suppose.

No I wasn't. I don't own an SS.org shirt unfortunately. I wonder who it was though.

I was at that show as well. I was a guest of Redemption, so I watched DT from side-stage with Nick. The main thing that was surprising to me was how quiet their stage is. They are all on in-ear monitors now so the only thing on stage making any noise is Porntoy's drum set. The two stacks of cabinets that JP had set up weren't even plugged in. I think they were only there to give JLB a place to sit while he's not singing (he had a chair and a little table right behind the cabs). JP did have two cabs downstage pointing backwards that were mic'd up. I couldn't see his rack, but I had a great view of his pedal board which is way too big.

I was at the Philly show, they and Into eternity rocked the house! But did anyone see the completely random people in ant and raid costumes? I'm pretty sure I saw it and the people with me saw it. Could anyone confirm this or am I just .

Yea I was there too. I was up in section 8R which is basically the center of the section right under the very top. I wish I was closer but there really isnt a bad seat in the house. I thought they were amazing too...but I DO wish Portnoy changed the set list up a bit. They should have played more from ToT and Octavarium, but I really cant complain because everything they DID play was FLAWLESS . I was expecting them to play Home..considering they were on their home turf pretty much. And I was also expecting either Pull Me Under or Under A Glass Moon but again...I cant complain lol.

Into Eternity was pretty kickass, but they kinda sounded shitty....and the wind didnt help either. The guitars weren't loud enough, but Stew sounded great....even when he was shattering everyones ear drums . I missed the first minute or so of Nothing, so can anyone tell me if he nailed the high notes in the first verses?

I saw them earlier this month, they opened with some of Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (you know, the opening song for 2001) Did they do this for you? It created an amazing feeling. Best way possible to open a concert!

If it was someone with a black baseball cap. Then that was me. On the way out after the show, someone said "hey, cool shirt" in my direction while passing by. But I didn't know if it was directed at me or not.

The guys in the ant costumes were the guys from Redemption. Philly was the last night of the tour, so they played a goof on DT. They were planning it all out when I saw them in NJ.
