well, he's not bad, he just plays really simple parts, like Alex does, too.

Not to mention, a picture of a sampler with Michael Anthony's picture on it...

He's not a monster technician, but to my ears his bass parts are a crucial part of the classic VH sound. If they were erased from the mix you'd definitely hear it.

First thing that comes to mind is "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love"... the timing, tone, and execution of those bass parts is essential or the song sounds totally empty.

I get tired of people ripping on MA's bass playing skill. He has always played simple but solid parts. I've seen them live, and his playing doesn't make me go "wow", but it's not inconsistent or bad either. He's what bass players traditionally had been; part of the rhythm section.

Not every bassist plays like Billy Sheehan or John Myung.

Besides, with as huge a head as EVH has, do you all really think he'd allow MA to be flashy? It would compete for the spotlight too much, and EVH can't have that.

That's why EVH is so volatile with lead singers.

Definitely. Listen to any of the first four albums (the ones that really count), and you can hear MA setting up a nice pocket all over the place. Which is impressive, considering that Alex is hardly what I would consider a "groove" drummer.
