OSI Appreciation thread

This album rules. Picture NIN covering the Beatles in 7/4 singing songs with dorky quasi-political lyrics. Their debut was a concept album abotu the dissimination of information within America by the American media, and was Kevin Moore's response to 9/11.

Additionally, it's just kickass music. Kevin Moore, Jim Mattheos, Sean Malone, and Mike Portnoy, with a guest vocal by Steven Wilson.

I agree completely. I was hooked on the tiny part of shutdown long before I was into Dream Theater. It was a long time until I found the whole album, and I still listen it almost daily.

My favorites are Shutdown, When You're Ready and Memories Daydreams Lapses.

Their second effort, Free, continues the first one but some moments on it are just pale in comparison with the first one.

The opener on "Free" sucks, but the rest of the album is quite good, if not as thematic.

I still haven't got around to picking up their cd, I spotted one of their cds last weekend when I went to buy some cds. I'll pick it up.

Grab the limited edition if you can, Shawn - there's some great studio videos oof Portnoy cutting the drum parts on the bonus disc, and the two covers (Floyd's "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and Neil Young's "New Mamma") are both awesome reworkings. Also, the raw cut "The Thing That Never Was," a 20-odd-minute prog/metal track that Kevin Moore spliced, sampled, and edited the hell out of to make four or five of the album's tracks, is pretty cool both in its own right and to hear just how far he took the material.

Only on one track, "shutDOWN," but it rules.

Still, the involvement of Sean Malone and Kevin Moore make it worth buying, anyway.

I'm just sad Malone wasn't on OSI2. :/
