Remember the obscure thrash thread?

...well, I was bored and had time to kill so I updated it with vids for almost every band mentioned, so go take a look if you're in the mood Right now, though, death metal is where I'm at, so reccommend me some lesser-known or obscure death metal bands that you reckon the rest of the board might now know of, and eventually I'll give this thread the same treatment as the thrash thread. List away!

I'm gonna include some melo-death in this, just because I feel like it.

Anata
Darkane
Detonation
Divine Empire
Grimfist
Total Devastation
Vile

Just the ones I don't hear about on a semi-regular basis.

'Sall good, when I make the list I'll be sure to sub-genrefy (shh, it's totally a real word) so that we windmilling, corpse-fucking, priest-shanking, haven't-changed-our-clothes-since-Dawn Of Possession types know what to avoid

Anyone heard of De Lirium's Order from Finland? I haven't heard their new CD yet, but "Victim No. 52" is an awesome album. Thrashy and really technical death metal, but still very catchy.

I'm in two minds about Anata. They play a simpler, old-school form of death metal yet their tones/mixing is beyond terrible; it doesn't sound old-school, new-school or any other school, it's the most indistinct band sound I've ever heard.

Darkane were pretty good for a melodeath band, what with the distinct lack of nu-metal/Pantera influence. The vocals, especially during the chorus, were very Devin Townsend which was somewhat of a surprise.

Divine Empire are in that late 90's vein that I don't particulalry enjoy, but anyone who likes bands like Decrepit Birth and Deeds Of Flesh should check them out. That goes for Vile too, now that I think about it.

Grimfist sounded like a pale imitation of Darkthrone's Soulside Journey but with all the attitude drained out, can't say I like what I've heard.

Total Devastation... I'm not sure what I think about them. It doesn't sound much like death metal at all to my ears. There are parts kinda similar to melodeath and other parts that sound like Nasum when they're not grinding, but overall it's just... odd. I'll give it some time as it's not what I was anticipating.

Haven't heard Detonation, but all in good time...

DE LIRIUM'S ORDER
For one of the more modern death metal bands that was surprisingly enjoyable, heh. Nothing I'd listen to every day, but much better than most of that crow.

Anyone else?

What Anata did you hear? Try "Better Grieved Than Fooled" on their Myspace. Though that player doesn't do the CD justice, simple is not what I'd call them.

Detonation Is pretty straight up melo-death, but I like them for some reason.

I like some thrash with my death sometimes, hence the Grimfist. 90% of the DM in this house is name-band, like Suffocation, Malevolent Creation, and Disincarnate.

Heh, yeah, I forgot to mention that before, the Anata I checked out sounded like simple old-school DM until it randomly busted into an intricate Cryptopsy-esque passage, and then back to simple again. I can't remember the track name but I'm pretty sure it's a recent track.

Yeah, weird but not simple. Their earlier stuff is like a melo/old school mix, the newest is like that. Tech one minute, melo the next. It's never boring for me.
