If I remember correctly they did get asked, and quite rightly turned it down.

I agree that Jerry Cantrell was the brains behind the tunes (although almost all of the Layne-penned tunes are up high on my favourites list) but at the same time I would be approaching the new material with some trepidation. I have heard Degradation Trip and it was a bit samey-samey (maybe cause I have the double CD version).

Well, it won't be the same with out Layne obviously. I loved the harmonization between Layne and Cantrell's voice. Its no where near as good with this new guy. But as said, Jerry pretty much was the songwriter for AIC, though Layne contributed and did the odd song (Eg.Angry chair). But Cantrell is a great song writer, and its pretty much all the original members, so! It should kick ass. I'd seriously just make Jerry lead singer lol. Fuck off that other guy, it'd look better, if its all original AIC (minus Layne of sadly). I am pumped for it though! GO AIC!

I've noticed that especially with Alice in Chains, fans of a band that lost a member are a little touchy about the band continuing afterwards. It actually reminds me of the way children would be upset if they lost a parent and the surviving one remarried later. I've heard countless people say it's not AIC without Layne, but to me, it still is. Only some of the vocals sound a little different, but that's to be expected. This is similar to Drowning Pool continuing without Dave Williams and I'd say they are still pretty good.

I think, if a band loses its singer and they want to keep going with a new singer, they should change their name, consider it a fresh start as a new band.

There have been reunions far more questionable than this one, in my opinion. I'm just wondering if the third Jerry Cantrell album he recorded with the bassist and drummer from Jane's Addiction will ever see the light of day. I guess that material will probably make up the basis of the new AIC. I'm optimistic.

Not when the driving force of the band is still there. Jerry wrote the majority of the aic tunes and towards the end he sang most of them too. Take a good listen to the self tittled record. It is mostly jerrry singing. If anything Aic should have just found a guy to play backup guitars and harmonize with jerry, not a new lead singer. If they got someone who sounded remotly close to layne I'm willing to bet casual fans wouldn't even know the difference.(the new fuel singer is a good example. That guy sounds nearly identical to their old one. I seriously didn't even know they got a new singer.) The song writing will be there, however with the current lineup the sounds will diminish slightly. But there is no reason for a band as legendary as AIC to pull an audioslave. They are to damn good at the core. Besides they pretty much are used to doing this without Layne. He was hardly around for the last record.

True...I was thinking mainly of Queen

I love old Queen, they're one of my favourite bands. The band that's on tour now is not Queen.

Though, on the other hand, Black Sabbath.

No, I agree, Sabbath was one of the examples where I didn't mind them keeping the name when they switched singers.

Queen w/ new singer =
Sabbath w/ new singer =

Though, I can't help but think the albums with Dio would have sold better if they had been promoted as "Heaven and Hell! The new band featuring founding members of Black Sabbath!" instead of "Black Sabbath! Now with 100% less Ozzy!"

Though these days, it'd be best to promote it as "We swear, Sharon Osbourne had nothing to do with this!"
