Things that caught my interest

as i browsed the music magazine's at Borders. Ended up buying a copy of Revolver.

1) Chinese Democracy leaks
Apparently over an hours worth of material from Guns 'N' Roses long-awaited Chinese Democracy have been leaked to the internet. Several of the songs were reviewed in whatever magazine had the article, with plenty of positive feedback. I heard one of the new tunes on the radio a few months back, when the CD was supposedly being released in March... Anybody gotten their hands on any of these tunes or know where i might be able to find em? I feel like searching on Limewire or something likewise will be a dead end.

2) Projekt Revolution
Chester Bennington's brainchild tour... I was impressed with the lineup, just because they really do have variety. The big-wigs are Linkin Park (duh), My Chemical Romance, Him, Placebo, and Taking Back Sunday. All the other bands with Linkin Park was a big "Huh?" for me. But the other stage has some hip-hop acts and some other interesting stuff. I used to be into Linkin Park's old material, and I haven't heard much of the new album (what i heard didn't interest me), but I know they've got great synergy with the crowd. I've also been too lazy to pick of MCR's "The Black Parade", but I figure all that hype has to amount to something... And i kinda dig the singles i've heard. The lineup is eclectic, ranging from stuff I know to stuff I've never heard of. All in all, if the ticket prices are reasonable, I think I'm gonna go to this tour.

3)An article on Dream Theater's Systematic Chaos
A few things
- The promo photo has the guys trying to look young and hip. They mostly manage to pull it off, but Rudess looks fuckin goofy... And Myung is on the far left, just on the left of the binding, so at first it looks like a picture of just the other 4 guys. heheh.
-They say that this may be DT's biggest album. I was like . But it reminded me again that despite whatever i may actually think of their new material, they always seem to grow as a band. They're always doing something new, and that keeps them vital. Instead of their career fading into small clubs for a few die-hard fans in their 30's and 40's, they keep doing better for themselves.

4)Serj Tankian Solo Album
I know System fans are greatly outnumbered here, they're probably my favorite band and I didn't know Serj had a solo album (seperate from other projects he's done/is working on) coming out in october.
Quote:
"I have the same excitement and energy as I had working on the first System record," he says. Tankian, who wrote the album on piano and acoustic guitar, says the songs are heavy but not really metallic. "It's powerful in a different kind of way," he explains. "There's lots of orchestration, and it's really progressive."
I repeat.

5)An excerpt from Brian "Head" Welch's book
I think this was discussed already on the boards but they had a 2 page excerpt from his book in Revolver. It told of the events right after Woodstock '99 and how his marriage went to shit, his wife leaving him, and ending up with him taking his daughter on the road with him full time. I was just like "wow..." I mean to take his daughter on the road full time seemed crazy, but this was a good 6 years before he left the band too... The writing was far from inspired, but I never really cared for inspired writing. It's genuine and from the heart, and it just tells a real story of a guys life. I love that kind of stuff, so I think I'm gonna pick this up.

oh. and in the promo picture he's floating in the water... fuckin holding one of his guitars. it's soaked. All i could do was look at that and think WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TO A PERFECTLY GOOD GUITAR?
Even JESUS wouldn't have told him to do that. wtf?

The new GnR sucks....HARD. Bumblefoot is decent, but the tracks just don't do anything for me...they've been leaked all over the place, and I wish they'd renamed the band and stayed local, lol. You can find em on myspace and a few tracks lurking here and there on Limewire, but they're hardly worth putting forth the effort to get ahold of, IMO.

I miss the old GnR...lol. I will say the rest of the old line-up is doing a kickass job with Velvet Revolver...love that band.

You say "tomato" I say "Fuck You".

I'll admit, they're nothing new to the ear, but damn they can rock out. And Scott Weiland...despite his AMAZING drug habits, lol, is still a kickass singer/songwriter.

It's just good ol' rock n roll.

Daron from System is the reason I picked up the guitar in the first place. I used to spend most of my guitar time learning their songs, I actually still remember most of them, I was gonna save up to get an Ibanez Iceman cause Daron had one..the old bassist in my band had a Gibson Thunderbird IV (the ridiculously overpriced one) because Shavo did. We were pretty hooked. But after I got into more metal music, I stopped liking them as much. After Mezmerize and Hypnotize came out, it was pretty much over for me, although there are a few good songs on both. I just don't like the idea of Daron controlling the band.

So Serj's album is most definitely something I'm going to pick up. His Serart album is pretty awesome too.

I'm a big System of a Down fan, have no interest in the new G'n'R, but slight interest in Head's book.

I love SoaD, you're not alone. Though I too prefer Serj to Daron (making an artificial separation/choice there, of course). I'll definitely check out Serj's CD.

I haven't seen a festival lineup yet I'd be interested in paying for (my bro got free tickets to Ozzfest though, so I'll get to see Ozzy and Static-X at least ); I actually actively dislike all the bands on the PR tour except LP (I really dig their new one, not a huge leap, but they're at least *trying* to branch out a little).

Head's book is pretty cool, if you read with an open mind. It's a pretty fascinating look behind the scenes, completely from his perspective, including his spiritual conversion and its effects so far. I read some things that made me uncomfortable, even as someone who's probably closer to his point of view than most, but he simply presents it as his life, his story, where he went way wrong and how he's trying to be right.

And I soooo have no interest in anything Axl

Revolver is a great magazine but I like Metal Hammer better. Borders is awesome.
