1983 Ronnie James Dio "Rainbow In The Dark" - Rock Palace

This is amazing. Best version I've ever heard.

Yeah, that probably is the best version of Rainbow that I've ever seen. Pretty sweet.

This makes me want to travel to see another Heaven & Hell show this fall.

Vivian Campbell had so much promise. What the hell happened--how does he get from this to playing second fiddle in Def Leppard?

SevenatoR is a jewel in the rough
He actually started a band or two in between that never took off. One was called Trinity and one was called the River Dogs, I think. He was also in Whitesnake for a time, as well. I remember reading an interview he did a long time ago, right after he left Dio, where he was complaining that RJD was always "warbling over his licks". Apparently they didn't see eye to eye and believe it or not, he kinda poked fun that the whole "metal" thing, too.

BTW, I thought that vid kicked large ass.

Well, fuck him, then. Dio is one of the greatest metal vocalists of all time, and he should have been honored to have worked with the guy who sung for both Rainbow and Sabbath.

Yeah, I remember the River Dogs, and of course Whitesnake. He also did the Shadow King project with Lou Gramm. Thing is, he got fired from Whitesnake for a "negative attitude" according to Wikipedia, and he just seems to have no ambition as a guitarist. I mean, there's no shame in touring the world playing Steve Clark's guitar parts, but Vivian had a lot more potential than that.

BTW, he has had multiple printed bitch sessions about Ronnie over the years. There seem to be three main themes:

1. He wasn't really that into metal. Which just makes him an opportunist, since he can't have had any illusions about Ronnie's musical direction.

2. The fact that he got a salary and not royalties. Easy to understand if you look at the name on the cover. Since he went solo, Dio's bandmates have always been employees, not partners. And actually at the beginning it was probably a better risk for the bandmates, since they would be entitled to their salaries regardless of whether Ronnie ever netted a dime in royalties.

3. Various complaints about Ronnie having a bad attitude or being hard to work with. Well, boo-fucking-hoo. Guess Viv should have stayed in the UK bars and not gotten his feelings hurt. Ronnie is known as a taskmaster, but is also known to be tremendously loyal. He worked very hard for many years to get where he is, so gee, maybe he expected the same out of some kid who got fame handed to him on a silver platter.

I to am more than a little puzzled how Vivian Campbell went from one of the baddest mofos of the 80s to a back up guitarist in Def Leppard. If you listen to those old Dio records Campbell was on fire. Now you barely notice he's even in the band. It's a shame really.

Awesome vid and killer performance. I've always liked Vivian Campbell's solo in this tune too, it was always one of my favs of his. Ronnie James Dio kicks ass.

I think it's all about the money. I've seen some video of little solo spots that that they give him in Deaf Lepperd.

I've been in Def (ha) chat rooms before. His playing isn't respected very much. But he's making a ton of dough I'm sure. For him, the situation is obviously preferable. He's been in that band by far the longest.

But, be honest... if you had a chance to shred and be respected by a bunch of guitar geeks and metal heads, yet earn a pretty moderate living, or the opportunity to make a ton of dough and have unlimited sex with female fans - which would you choose?

For me, that would be a close call. I don't know if there are restrictions on whether he can do clinics or put together his own projects. And, as a guitarist of his caliber, I would want royalties in a band like Dio. To me, he was the best guitarist Dio has ever had (that's just MO), and his playing adds a LOT to the music.

hey, 4 smileys... that's a record for me, i think

Just went to Summerfest in Milwaukee.
Took the wife to Def Leppard/Foreigner/Styx show.
Foreigner and Styx were great. Arena rock legends.
Def? We left early.
