Personally I can't understand why anyone would consider him a genius. I thought his 2 hours of silence piece was the most ridiculous thing ever, but this organ piece played over 639 years is just so inane and mindless... I feel like slapping the guy upside the head.

No matter what you say, I don't think his 2 hours of silence or this 639 year organ piece are music. And some people might say "he was trying to show that silence is important in music too." And I'd say, "Yeah, if you HAVE music. He wrote an entire piece with nothing but silence." Another person might say, "He was trying to emphasize the sound between pieces in a performance, the sound of the coughing, etc." And then I'd say, "Nobody goes to a concert to hear the silence between songs. They go there to hear the songs. You'd be an idiot to go to a concert just to listen to coughing in between songs."

This man is a complete hack and I can't understand why he gets such publicity or why anyone would consider him creative. The stuff he does is stuff I used to joke about in high school (when I was in music class in high school, I wrote an entire piece using nothing but rests of different length. Like quarter rest, quarter rest, half rest, full rest, eighth rest, eighth rest, eighth rest, eighth rest, half rest, sixteenth rest, etc. and I did that as a joke).

Well, if you reat that, it says it's not Cage himself that decided it would play for that long.

I think it's a nice project in itself, at the complete opposite of our modern lifestyle. I think it says something about the way we live.
