gah! Carpal Tunnel?!

well, last week i started to feel some weird pains in my left pinky, but didn't think much of it. i figured that i somehow sprained it. but then today when i tried playing some guitar, i felt more pain throughout my pinky, into my hand.

my arm/wrist/hand posture is pretty good, since i keep my guitar up pretty high, so i actually don't think my guitar playing is the cause. what i think is causing it might be too much keyboard activity (i'm blaming too much physics homework, not too much SS.org ).

could this be an onset of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? i just did some reading online, and it seems like it could be the start. it seems that what i should be doing is getting some sort of wrist splint and taking it easy on the guitar playing for a while, and also the typing. on the other hand (heh), i also read this, "A 2001 study by the Mayo Clinic found heavy computer use (up to 7 hours a day) did not increase a person's risk of developing carpal tunnel syndrome."

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/c...pal_tunnel.htm

have any of you guys been through CTS? i guess i'll also start taking "warming up" and hand stretches more seriously :p

I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways,
we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
We'll cross the streams.

Hey Leon, sorry to hear about your carpal tunnel. I get it sometimes, too, due to too much computer work. In me it manifests as a weakness in the thumb and forefinger. What has worked for me is taking an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen or naproxen sodium, and using a program on my computer to regulate my activity and force me to take breaks. If I remember correctly you're a fellow Linux guy. Workrave is by far the best program I've found for Linux:

Best of luck, man!

By the way---and I know this is totally off-topic---but your signature... Is there something more to it than the obvious dong joke? I feel like I'm missing something...

Leon, it may not be carpal tunnel, it could be your spine. I have back/shoulder issues from the type of work I do, complicated by a minor motorcycle crash, which show as a numb left pinky and wrist occasionally. I also get knee and hip pains in my right leg.
Try finding someone who can treat your particular problem properly, and most importantly learn some stretches.
Of course don't rule out carpal tunnel, get it checked. It just sounds suspiciously like the problem is spinal.

spine? i suppose that could be it, but i would think that my spine has been very happy lately, as i've been running regularly for the past two months. with the increased activity i've noticed that i stand about an inch taller . or, maybe that's it?

i'll definitely be getting it checked out, though . once my medical insurance gets straightened out this year, it'll be my #1.

Your lifestyle probably gets you into the same issues mine does, hunched over computers, guitars, textbooks etc,. What happens is the chest muscles tighten up and the back muscles lengthen which causes the shoulders to pull forward and screws with the discs and ribs and all that.
Could be that your recent exercise bout is affecting things.

Dude, i cannot stress the importance of this:
STRETCH a bit before you play. Limber up your hands, it makes a huge difference, trust me.

Glory and praise to Thee, Satan, on high,
Where Thou didst reign, in Hell where Thou dost lie,
Vanquished, silent, dreaming eternally.
Grant that my soul some day rest close to Thee
Under the Tree of Knowledge which shall spread
Its branches like a Temple overhead.

i guess it's one of those things that people need to experience before they learn, like me

as my US History teacher used to say, "Pain is an incredible teacher."
