Bands that drastically changed their style, for the better (or worse)

On the radio at work they have this weekend setup where they play two tracks by the same artist in a row, so every time they play that god-awful new Silverchair song they end up playing one of their old grunge songs, and it got me thinking: When bands radically change their style, how often in your opinion do they change for the better? Post away!

Old Metallica > New Metallica

Erm.. Chimaira have gone through quite a shift musically, their first album was sort of a Nu-Fear Factory thing, then they went all metalcore, before settling on 'their' sound they've had the last couple of albums.

Meshuggah - Contradictions Collapse, then the None EP followed by Destroy Erase Improve... a somewhat apt title considering the improvement from CC to None and hints of the Meshuggah sound to come actually emerging in full.

Slayerrrrrrrrr....... ok joking about that one!

Paradise Lost, with the 'One Second' album. That was a total about-face for them, although it worked really well.

Christian Death underwent a pretty drastic shift in style between 'Only Theatre of Pain' and 'Catastrophe Ballet'...

Dream Theater shift style on an almost album-by-album basis to some extent...

Nothing like a good depressant to chase the blues away!

Daggorath is a jewel in the rough
Pantera is the one that springs to mind, from the earlier glam days to the later more brutal thrash.

Yeah, of course Metallica is one. Korn is another band that I just can't seem to get into much these days. I was a huge fan back in the 90s, especially around 1996. 311 is another band that I noticed has changed a little. Their earlier stuff is awesome. There are alot of bands that I could list actually.

Anathema really changed their style for the better. Their old stuff is just really mediocre, while about everything from Eternity forward has been really good.

Now I lay me down to sleep
Blah, blah, blah my soul to keep
If I die before I wake
I'll go to hell for heaven's sake

Though this probably isn't a "drastic change" the only band I can actually come up with right at the moment that changed for the better is Marilyn Manson. I don't care for any of their first few albums. I just felt it hollow, overly simplistic, and just not catchy. But from Mechanical Animals and on I think it just got better and better. Musically speaking the songs were much better and much more catchy. Granted that album was much softer than previous material. Then the amazing Holywood came out and WOW, even more kick ass. And The Golden Age of Grotesque was harsh, powerful, and aggressive as well as very catchy. So I think they got better as time went on. Though, after managing to hear the entire new album I only really like 2 songs a lot sadly.

Every band changes over time, that's a given. But I personally feel most have changed for the worst.

Rev.
