![]() ![]() | Tool and drastic style change are words that just do not fit together. Tool have hardly changed their style since day one, they've matured a lot and become more 'progressive' but they have always been a drop D stoner prog band. I also disagree that they got worse, totally the opposite in my view. ![]() Not a band, but John Coltrane changed his style every record, and particularly around the shift from Atlantic to Impulse! when he went from 'musical' exploration (giant steps etc.) to 'spiritual' exploration. Faith No More changed a lot. They covered everything from jam band to poppy metal to some sort of weird proto hardcore. And a whole load of stuff in between. Beastie Boys also did a fuck load of styles. Started out as a straight up hardcore band, then rap-rocky type stuff, straight hip hop, funk, their own hip hop, 'jazzy' stuff etc. etc. but they always have an immediately identifiable groove to their sound (perhaps Mario Whats his name Jr?) which is what makes them kick ass. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | How about Shotgun Messiah? From unbearable '80s glam, to generic hard rock, to a pretty decent industrial band... which Skold took with him to KMFDM. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Jesus, we have a winner. Throw the Stones (beatles-esq pop with more edge to sprawling bar rock) and Pink Floyd (beatles-esq pop with more acid to, well, "The Wall") in for good measure, but if you want one of the most dramatic evolutions of a band, put the first couple Beatles tracks against most of "The White Album" and see how many people even realize it's the same band. A few other noteworthy mentions: Porcupine Tree - They released a handful of good-but-not-memorable prog albums that had a lot of potential but not much more, kind of found their groove around "Lightbulb Sun," and then their last three albums have been explosive hard rock/prog outings. Bob Dylan - Grab the "Live at King Albert's Hall" bootleg for a classic example - he opens with a classic acoustic set of folk material, then brings out a rock band for the second set to cries of "Judas!" from the audience. Irony is, the second set kicks the shit out of the first. R.E.M - they blow, with the very notable exception of "Monster." It's like they got drunk one night, fell over, accidently turned on their amp's distortion, and liked it enough to record a great hard alternative album, then sobered off and unstrapped the testicles. Live - again, not as great an extyent, but "Mental Jewelry" sounds very REM/U2, while suddenly "Throwing Copper" is one of the pinaccles of the grunge movement. Then, they got into more bass-and-drum oriented rock, and sort of suck agan these days. Also, while it's more of a diversion/tribute than a true "change," Opeth's "Damnation" is another one of those albums where you play it back to back with "Blackwater Park" and most people would never guess it's the same band. ![]() "...and everything under the sun is in tune, but the sun is eclipsed by the moon." |

![]() ![]() | No, the first 5 albums, particularly Murmur and Document, are fine albums. Before Michael Stipe turned into a giant flapping blue cock. |

To be fair, I like a few tracks ("The One I Love" off Document, I think, rules), but they're a band I can't take in more than VERY small doses. | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | You can say that again. Listen to "Zombie Ritual" and "The Flesh and the Power It Holds" back to back. Seriously doesn't even sound like the same singer, even though both were Chuck singing. Come to think of it, very few band stay the same over the years. Most of the bands I used to like that are still around lost my interest...some of them, however, gain my interest back eventually. |
