Hurt is one song I have mixed emotions about him doing, sure he did an excellent cover and the song fits him so well, I just hate how that song comes up all the time as "the" Johnny Cash song. It's great that him doing that song introduced new people to his music, I just hate it when people come across as thinking that it is his greatest work or the only thing he ever did.

There's something about Johnny Cash playing San Quentin that's just so... perfect. The man had a rough life, and the video for "Hurt" is such a great autobiography. In fact, Trent now considers "Hurt" to be Johnny's song.

I can believe that, i mean, Cash did such a good job covering it, that he made NiN's version look like the cover.

Nah, I still prefer the NIN version... Johnny Cash's vocal is too powerful, too uplifting on the chorus. He makes it a song about redemption. The original is so wispy and frail, and it "feels" more like a song about being devoured by the addiction. Both interpretations are totally valid, but I jsut think NIN's fits the thematic content a bit more...

I agree. It is one of those rare occurrences, like Jimi Hendrix covering "All Along the Watchtower".

Drew has a habit lately of prefacing many of his posts with the negative statement "Nah...", even when no one asked him a direct yes or no question.
