![]() | Illegal Downloading Vs. Burning CDs This has been on my mind a lot lately....though I buy most of my CD's, I still get copies of some from my friends when they burn them for me. Yet, I'm against illegal downloading, and I haven't done it in years. I'm all about supporting the artist and buying their album. But then I thought, isn't getting a CD burnt for me the exact same thing as downloading/stealing an album off the internet? I'm not paying for it, so it kind of is... What do you guys think? |

![]() | Yeah, it still just seems different for some reason. Not because of the actual process itself, but how it's percieved - I mean, you don't see people getting busted for holding burned CDs on them, while plenty of people are getting into trouble for illegally downloaded songs on their computers. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I love living in Canada where they don't have silly laws like this. I download music, but if it's worth it, I'll buy the CD, DVDs, concert tickets, t-shirts, etc. CD sales contribute very little to the artist's paycheck, and that's only after they pay back the recording costs to the label (assuming the label is honest about the recording costs, etc. which they rarely are). Only multi-platinum selling artists see a dime from record sales (on major labels, indies are better, especially when you don't spend much on recording). Bands get most of their income from concert tickets and merch. Downloading creates fans, period. Anti-piracy laws create more piracy. Bands supporting anti-piracy laws...well, you heard St. Anger ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I am pro downloading. I download a cd and give it a good listen. If I like it I buy it and support the artist. ( seriously, I do.) If it sucks then I thank the good folks at limwire for helping me not waste me money on shit and delete it. It is not our fault that so many record companies and musicians put on cds with one good tune and 12 filler songs that suck balls. So that is why downloading is ok imo. As long as you support what you will actually listen buy purchasing it it's cool. |

I for one know that I probably would have never gotten into guitar or music as much as I have if it wasn't for the fact that I can download music since I've never had the money to purchase many cds. | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Downloading scares the hell out of record companies and some bands, because previously they could release basically anything and people would have to buy it to hear it. Now, people can hear it before they decide to buy it, and they won't buy it if they don't like it. People are more critical of what they do/don't like. Not to mention, live bootlegs, rare tracks, rough demos, etc. are much more readily available now through downloading, which tends to expose crappy bands for what they are. If they can't pull it off live, or without a decent producer, people will hear about it. The plus side is, bands that are actually really solid end up with some really cool stuff ending up on the internet for their fans. I personally love hearing unmastered mixes of albums before they're released to hear them before they're overcompressed, or hearing demos of songs to compare to how the ended up, or live versions that are drastically different from the album versions. For example, Rise Against's new album sounds great unmastered, the demos Bob Ezrin did with the Deftones sound really great, and I'm looking forward to finding some Tool bootlegs from this tour to hear what the added parts sound like. |

![]() ![]() ![]() | I usually download album's before I buy them, just to see if they are worth buying. I love genuine cd's, so I rarely have burned cd's. I am all about supporting the artist I like, but they have to keep a high standard with their music, or else ![]() |
