![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Can you predict a 7 from a detuned 6? Have you ever heard a new band that you weren't familiar with and been able to tell if it was a detuned 6 or a 7 string? I was able to tell that Meyvn, Mercenary, and Biomechanical use 7-strings before knowing more about them. Just wondering if anyone else has been able to tell the tonal difference between them. ![]() Metal... Nuff Said!! ![]() | Erm, only if I them play a C or lower. Detuned guitars usually aren't detuned all the way to B. If they are tuned down that low they're usually baritone guitars. In either case I can't tell if it's a 7 string guitar, detuned 6 string, or baritone guitar if they play a C# power chord. Honestly I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who KNOWS the difference in sound as opposed to can take a pretty good guess based on the notes being played (not the tone). |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The main way to tell is, most bands that use 7 strings use DiMarzios or EMG 707s, which have a distinct sound. I'd say most bands who tune to B with a 6 use Duncans or EMG 81s. Thats the main way to give an educated guess, otherwise there's no real way. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I can usually tell if a band plays 7 or a detuned 6. They just sound different. Even if the 6 is tuned to B, I usually can still tell. They don't sound as good as the real thing.lol Too much blood in my alcohol system |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | With my old band, i used a sixer tuned drop D, down 1 whole step. When I got my seven, I went to work moving our stuff over to seven string so I wouldn't have to switch tunings between songs anymore.. We had always recorded our practices but even listening back, I couldn't tell what guitar I used on each tape, unless I looked at the date. |

I can tell a difference sometimes because usually a 6 string sounds thicker then a 7 string once they get into the middle register. But only sometimes, good production hides it. Live, I count the tuners on the headstocks and look for the distinctive look of a EMG 707 housing ![]() | |

It tends to be the range of notes covered that makes me think a track's played on a seven. Tonally though, I'm not sure; when John Petrucci switched to mainly playing detuned sixes rather than sevens I didn't notice until I saw a tab of 'As I Am' in Guitar World...
